Happy Winter Solstice!

Today marks the winter solstice, when the daily path of the Sun in the sky has its lowest peak - or, if you prefer, the north pole of the Earth's axis is tipped away from the Sun as much as it can. From now on we get longer days, shorter nights, and a Sun edging up higher every day in the sky. Yay!

Here's the science behind the real reason for the seasons:

If we counted in base 2 rather than in base 10 we'd have celebrated the 100,000th anniversary of Kennedy's death 18 years ago

I don’t remember in the 1960s commemorating anything that happened fifty years earlier, in the 1910s.

NASA salutes our country's veterans this Veteran's Day. Seen here is John Young, astronaut and Navy veteran, saluting the U.S. flag at the Descartes landing site during the first Apollo 16 extravehicular activity. Young, commander of the Apollo 16 lunar landing mission, jumps up from the lunar surface as astronaut and Air Force veteran, Charles M. Duke Jr., lunar module pilot, took this picture.

The Lunar Module (LM) "Orion" is on the left. The Lunar Roving Vehicle is parked beside the LM. The object behind Young in the shade of the LM is the Far Ultraviolet Camera/Spectrograph. Stone Mountain dominates the background in this lunar scene.

Abacus Wristwatch
http://adafru.it/b87752

Nathan (of Pumpkris fame) shared a mostly 3D printable Abacus Wristwatch and HowTo over at his projects site HaHa Bird:

After building the abacus bracelet last year, I wanted to explore the idea of archaic wearable computing a little more. An abacus wristwatch seemed like a good way to do so, and the project would challenge me to learn 3D modeling. Pebble or the rumored iWatch would have nothing on the computing power I had in mind!

#CometISON entered the field of view of the HI-1 camera on NASA's Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory, or STEREO, on Nov. 21, 2013, and the comet shows up clearly, appearing to still be intact.

Dark "clouds" coming from the right are more dense areas in the solar wind, causing ripples in Comet Encke's tail. Using comet tails as tracers can provide valuable data about solar wind conditions near the sun.

When the Mars Orbiter Mission launched yesterday, it launched into Earth orbit. The Mars Orbiter Mission must perform several rocket burns in order to increase its orbital altitude before departing for Mars. The first burn was completed successfully just minutes ago.

I love this pub. I've been coming here since I first moved in the area. The pizza is the best. I will not order from a delivery place anymore. Try the Mr. Green Jeans Pizza. The price for beer is fantastic. $4.50 for a pair of brews. I like the Dirty Dog, personally. The staff is awesome. They are friendly and always on point with service. Ruthie, Tanisha, and Heather are my favorites. There is a DJ at 10 PM every Friday and Saturday night. You can't beat the price and atmosphere. I recommend it to anyone. Cheers!
