Let's be clear: in my opinion, the people who are feeling "liberated" by a certain public figure's claims that political correctness has gone too far, are confused. There is a lot to be said for PC. Yes, for instance, I can see how that was a sexist shirt: (1)

On the other hand, ignorance, willful or feigned, is really becoming an issue that is doing a great disservice to our society.

A good example, a few years back, was the "Niggardly" flap (2)
Lack of vocabulary causing a backlash against the orator is something that should be politely and firmly corrected, not eagerly endorsed.

Now, it's Douglas Crockford's turn. He was summarily uninvited from the "Nodevember" conference to "make the conference a comfortable environment for all."

Except... No one can really point out what the perceived issues with Crockford are. Kassandra Perch's blog post may, at first blush, seem to shed light on a couple incidents (3)

Except, seems that a lot lays in the eye of the beholder: Crockford was talking about the original web as being a trusting environment, inviting systems promiscuity (and that was a good thing), versus the less utopian web where relationships were established to protect systems from intrusions and tampering.
Conclusion? "slut shaming" apparently. The mind boggles.

Why stop here, though? Did you know that an attempt at humor about not wanting weak things in one's program is a sexist comment?
I guess the offended parties consider themselves weak. Or they believe that he sees them as weak. Because, you know. Old dude.

So, net result? Well, I don't know. Maybe Crockford is that terrible person after all. Some facts would help, though, because it is more likely that a positive technical influence is being silenced and there is nothing for the rest of society to gain in this scenario.

I was totally not completely wrong to buy a mid 2010 Mac pro!

...because of course right after I bought it, it was discontinued. And I bought it for teh upgradez!

Anyway, I just:

1. Upped its RAM amount to 32GB (Apple begrudgingly updated their web site to finally admit that, yes, 8GB sticks are supported) (

2. Switched to a 980GB Patriot Ignite SSD (

3. Swapped the video card for my "old" PC's GTX660 -- not officially supported but totally works except EFI boot. Old but still 2.5x the performance provided by the original HD5770, plus access to Cuda.(

In summary: I am getting the same level of upgradability as I would from a hackintosh, for what ends up being a similar amortized cost, minus the headaches.

This is so ridiculous. Hearing the same folks who claim that gun control doesn't work are now making the case that terrorists attacks could be prevented by forcing cell phone vendors to hand over encryption keys.

You have to pick one: either the bad guys go through alternative channels than honest people, as can be the case with guns, or they don't. In case you do not understand that, the baddies do not have to use the same encryption methods as other users, either.

Well, at least we know how to survive a face palm...

Sobriety Counter ( a top alcoholism app.

Reminds me of all the features I've been meaning to add to it and haven't got around to, yet.

As a fairly recent LG urbane owner, I felt sad that so many great faces have a dim mode that doesn't look near as good as their bright mode.

So I put together this small racket app:

It does the stupidest thing: it attempts to make a face's bright settings also its dim settings.
It will not work with protected faces and will likely also not work it a face makes heavy usage of scripting.

If you download it, let me know how it is working for you (or not!)
