This weekend there were some small changes made to the Gradebook that may be causing a few problems for some of you who are using the Chrome Web Browser. I've already alerted Canvas Support about this issue and discovered a simple workaround until they fix it. See slide show linked to below.

Just got the official word the newest version of Chrome does not have this issue and a fix for older versions is on the way.

tl;dr: Update Google Chrome to version 41 and this issue will be gone, we have augmented code to help the older versions be more functional.

We originally identified this bug as a problem with Google Chrome, but our outstanding engineers were able to modify our code to help the issue. We are deploying the code change but have found that this issue is completely gone in version 41 of Chrome. Please check for updates and apply them and you should no longer see this issue. Let us know if you see this again or if you need any further support and we will diligently investigate. Keep learning!

Just wanted to let you know about a bug fix. For a while now, students were not able to self sign-up for groups if they were required to be in the same section in Canvas. This has been fixed now and should function normally.

Ho - Ho - Ho

Canvas Claus and the programing elves at Instructure have been busy preparing some presents that are coming on December 20th.

At the top of the list is "Differentiated Assignments" which now gives teachers the ability to assign something for one section or a subset of sections only without assigning it to all of them. This is a feature that  many of us have been asking for and it will give us more flexibility in how we use Canvas.

Other features on the list are a new Files Design and the ability to display student names in your grade book by Last Name first or keep them as they are now (+Ryan Hetrick one small step at a time ;).

Be sure to check out the Release notes to learn more about the new features coming and how to enable them in your courses. Here is the link to all the info and a ScreenCast.

Great video Rebecca! Love all the different visuals and the organization into mini topics. I'm not letting my daughter's see this or they might convince me to buy a horse and a dog : )

Happy Friday! Just wanted to let you all know that I've turned on the "Better File Browser" and "Differentiated Assignments" feature options for all courses this morning. I have been testing out these new features for over a month and they seem to be stable and provide more functionality so I thought it was time to push them out to all our courses in HBUHSD.

I think teachers will especially like the differentiated assignments feature. This gives you the ability to assign something for a specific section (period) in your course and not have it show up or count against the other sections. See http://guides.instructure.com/m/4152/l/101242-how-do-i-create-an-assignment-for-a-specific-section for more information on how to use this.

As always, I welcome your feedback on these changes.  Please let me know if any problems arise as a result. I can always revert our settings back to allow the new features on a course by course basis rather than turning them on for all courses.

Apparently 'muted' assignments and the scores teachers had for students on those assignments had been showing up in real time in our my.hbuhsd portal. Thankfully,  +Nichole Murray informed me of this this morning and we were able to correct this before noon.

Now my.hbuhsd does NOT display any assignments which have been muted in Canvas and the total grade students and parents see in my.hbuhsd and in Canvas respects the muted state of the assignments. In other words, if a grade is muted it does not count towards the final scores a student/parent sees. Teachers, however do see the effect of the muted grades in their gradebook.

I've checked several students and classes to ensure this is the case, but if you come across anything that doesn't look right, please let me know.

It's time to think about changing semesters in Canvas. I've put together some tips for you to answer some questions and to help make this process smooth. Be sure to check them out in our HB Canvas Central (for Teachers) help course.

An easy way to get to this is to click on the Help menu in Canvas and you will see a link to that course.

Let me know if you have any questions that aren't addressed there or need any assistance.
In order to create video or audio recordings your computer needs to be webcam-enabled. If you don't have a webcam on your computer, you can still record audio-only messages by first installing the Google Video Chat plugin. Install the Video Plugin. Don't have a webcam?

Keen thoughts! This echoes my experience as well. Telling us to shoot for the moon then giving us about an hour to get off the ground frustrated me and that was hard for me to keep in check.
