"WE had just woken up to the news that Britain had voted to leave the EU. Huddled around with coffee in one hand and a generously-chocolate biscuit in the other, people shared titbits of information they had picked up from the news. Cameron had resigned. The pound was plummeting. Companies were already announcing their departure. Would Ireland follow?"

There were two artists in particular that stood out for me, as each tackled a common topic amongst many of the artists with enough competency and flair to rise to the challenge, while also bringing enough of their own attitude, their own artistic specificity to signal that – hopefully – this is an artist whose only just begun.

Rusangano Family are an Irish hip hop group with a lot to say, and they can tell us a lot about Ireland today. The three members are each from a different country; God Knows is from Zimbabwe, MuRli is from Togo and MynameisjOhn is from Clare – two black members and one white, they’ve all grown-up in Ireland and wear a strong sense of Irishness on their sleeve.

WHEN I was in secondary school, Robert Ballagh was in my art history book. He was one of the first living artists I’d ever become familiar with – which is difficult to understate just how important that is to a young person. And as the years went by, I didn’t just know Ballagh as a person who made artworks but someone who believed in the responsibility and possibilities of artists getting involved with politics.

Should artists strike? Almost definitely. Will it make a difference? That’s a tougher question. What I can say is you can count this columnist as ready to rumble.

While the scale and ambitions of EVA have certainly developed over time, when I spoke to the artists involved they spoke about how genuine the experience had been, how open and earnest the people are, how clear the integrity at the heart of it was and how remarkable this contrasts with other biennials worldwide.

“I like that phenomenon of when you programme something, and part of the idea is the idea. It’s like, you just say there is a spoken word film festival happening in Limerick – and it becomes a kind of myth, no one can remember what happened or if it was any good because it was all spoken word. It’s oral history, it wasn’t written down.”

EVERY action has an equal and opposite reaction”, or so Isaac Newton told us. Most people don’t realise what he actually said was, “To every action there is always opposed an equal reaction: the mutual actions of two bodies upon each other are always equal, and directed to contrary parts”. But that’s not as catchy. Get your act together, Newton.

First article on the Limerick Leader

Haven't really used Google+ in a long time. Just went back to this profile and realised I have nearly 500,000 views. Wow.

Do many other people here use Google+ a lot?
