Purple people and racism, tropes, a toddler teaches lessons about writing, why do I hate Nanowrimo (hint: I don't), that guy that tried to torpedo Pratchett without reading him, a beloved-by-writers, but misquoted, sequel from the 90's, those pesky P.C. police, and more.
No, you're not reading that wrong. This is the very long overdue best of two years ago that, because of the horrific life circumstances of 2016, just kept getting postponed for longer and longer. The 2016 one will becoming in...

December's best articles:

Looks Like I Picked the Wrong Week to Stop Doing Amphetamines (Personal Update)
December has been so so so so so so much better than the rest of 2016 for me as a writer, but sometimes there's still just too much going on.

The Not Writing Part
When you want to write for money, there ends up being a lot of parts of your job that aren't actually writing.

Major Housekeeping (And the reason why)
This month kicked off a lot of big changes for me as a writer.
There will be no post tomorrow* When you see me next (on Monday) two major things that have been in the works for a while will be rolling out like the Autobots after Bumblebee discovers some energon. Well, technically three...

What is the worst book you just couldn't put down?

They're the books you hate to love (or maybe love to hate). But even though you couldn't stand them (or maybe you just knew you shouldn't be enjoying yourself), you just couldn't stop reading them.

Nominations needed for our January poll.

None of the staff came into work today, so I had to do this on my own.
Image description: Incredulous author Observed? OBSERVED? Apparently today is New Years Day..."observed." Were we too hungover to notice it yesterday? I guess this means that a bunch of people cried bitter tears that a vacati...

The Privilege of Daily Writing (And the Ableism of Prescribing It) Part 3
Part three of our series on those who simply can't write every day. Series starts here.

This is Not Real (Arielle K Harris)
Arielle K Harris gets another guest blog into the month's best with her thoughts about fiction.

Just Relax and Watch/Read It (Mailbox)
Janessa wonders if I can ever just relax and enjoy things I read.

Plus an honorable mention blast from the past.
The Contrarian is still out of school, which means eight hour days for me, so I'm focused on something I was going to have to get done before the end of the year anyway: the compiling of the month's best (so I can do the year...

If you're interested in following Writing about Writing (or me) on social media, here are the pros and cons of various media. Updated for 2017.

For example, My Twitter: Great place to get just every article and rerun I ever post. But if you like a lot of memes and macros mixed in and less of the social issue posts, you might want to go with Writing About Writing's Facebook page.

Or.....
Interested in following Writing About Writing? Or perhaps everything I write? If you're trying to follow Writing About Writing, it might actually be confusing to navigate all the different ways to do so. We're on several soci...

We just reached 2 million page views, and thanks to all of you for it.
Add caption I've got an awful lot of writing that is half formed, and less time to solidify it into actual posts while I'm visiting my mom, but I wanted to pause for a moment and thank everyone for getting me to the next majo...

This is more for the FB crowd, but I threw in a threesome joke to make it fun for all.
Well....it finally happened. My "can't even" about the comments on my Facebook page went from figurative to literal. At just shy of a quarter of a million people, gentle reminders have stopped working, admin-ing comments has ...

Come see the results of the Best Obscure Book poll, and keep your eye out for January's call for nominations later today.
Thank you everyone for participating in December's "Best Book That No One Seems to Have Heard Of" poll. I know it was a little weird for a poll, given the irony that the fewer people had heard of it, the worse it would do. Bu...

Where to Submit Your Short Pieces and (Hopefully, Eventually) Get Published by Bethany Brengan

Fortunately I was able to enlist some guest blogging help while I was going through the worst of my bronchitis (rather than put WAW on a hiatus) and Bethany's piece about where to submit was a well deserved best of the month.

Writing For Your Life by Marcy Kirkton

My mom even joined the fray of guest bloggers to help me push through and her article also was a big hit.

A somber note

A lot of artists have a lot of feelings about our US election, and I'm no different.

Plus a big personal update.
There will not be a lot of fanfare today. I spent 12 hours yesterday at Gilroy Gardens with The Contrarian, and even though it was wonderful beyond the telling of it, it took up the entire day. He is the perfect age for a pla...

I hope everyone has a wonderful, wonderful holiday season. Whether you're lighting a candle tonight, chasing a three year old down the stairs tomorrow (like me), or have some other yule type celebrations in mind. And if your traditions are more about self care and surviving, then stay strong.

If I get a guest post by Tuesday, I'll put that up, but otherwise I will see you on the 28th.

Happy Holidays!

Introduction
Chris Brecheen
I'm just this guy who loves to write. I've been doing it for thirty years, and even got a degree in Creative Writing that now covers a hole in my drywall. Two parts magical journey, one part advice disguised as tropetastic folksy wisdom, with a dash of talking cat, three sprigs of personified ideas, a healthy dollop of naughty, eight heaping tablespoons of towing the knife-edge line between irreverence and blasphemy, guest bloggers who live inside my head (and a couple who don't), a sprinkle of words that keep the prudes offended, regular Star Wars, Star Trek, and Joss Whedon references, and at least one doomsday plot per season, this blog claims almost no continuity except that it will be writing about writing. Or possibly cheese.
