I had the privilege of interviewing Chuck Ramsay, a highly-regarded DWI-defense lawyer who practices in Minnesota, about his struggle with addiction and how he overcame it.

There are two primary outcomes in a desperate struggle with addiction. The first is to keep going until you die. The second is to get caught.

+Sam Glover writes about my alma mater, William Mitchell College of Law, which appears to be the first law school to move toward online education (with the blessing of the American Bar Association).
Starting in 2015, William Mitchell College of Law will begin offering a hybrid curriculum that involves online classes punctuated by intense classroom time. This pretty much puts William Mitchell on the cutting edge of legal education.

New post: Blind Faith: Litigating in the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court.
The FISC may very well be a national treasure. It may very well have done an exemplary job. But this contention, like the contention that the FISC is nothing more than a rubber stamp, is beside the point. Litigating in the FISC is like arguing with a brick wall.

We've got a pretty healthy discussion going about headlines in the comments. Turns out - surprise - that lawyers don't like talking about copywriting stuff. It's beneath them.

My first deposition (defending one anyway) wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. All I had to do was show up. I wonder how other lawyers feel about this.

Sex sells, but not as much as this. The logic of Playboy founder Hugh Hefner.

My law school "do-over" post was one of 2013's most popular at Lawyerist.com. It also happened to be one of the most fun for me to write (and easiest, relatively speaking).

Lawyerist founder and editor-in-chief +Sam Glover says: "Chris Bradley offered 7 recommendations to current law students, and most of them boiled down to this sage advice for life as well as law school: stop taking yourself so seriously! All 7 are worth passing along to the law students in your life."

Here's the link to Lawyerist's 8 most-popular posts of 2013.

About time the T in LGBT gets some change in the military. If the Army lets Chelsea Manning start the male-to-female transition process by treating her with hormone therapy, or if her lawyer David Coombs makes that happen, this could mean big things for folks who identify as transgender. It means, at the very least, some measure of dignity.
“If Fort Leavenworth does not [provide hormone therapy for Chelsea Manning],” Coombs said, “I’m going to do everything in my power to make sure that they are forced to do so.”

Oh, the do-over. 7 things I wish I could do different if I could go back and do law school all over again.

Definitely. I chilled a bit, but could've used more of it.
