A few photos from my flight over the Canadian Rockies yesterday from Vancouver to Edmonton. Such stunningly beautiful mountains, and seeing the plains covered in snow was just magical.

It's pretty cool being able to work with cool people like +Suan Yeo and +Kimberley Hall. And of course to be going to beautiful Christchurch.

If you teach in New Zealand, these EdTechTeam GAFE Summits are something you might want to think about coming to. They are great events for really digging into what technology can help you do to empower the kids in your classroom. So many amazing possibilities!

Kia ora Kiwis! The EdTechTeam New Zealand South Island Summit featuring Google for Education is coming up in April.  With keynotes from Suan Yeo (Head of Google Education for Asia Pacific) and Google Certified Teachers Chris Betcher and Kimberley Hall, the event also features heaps of informative and inspiring workshops from experienced teachers that delve into not just the Google tools but more importantly, how to use them to help students learn better!

See you there. Register at https://nz.gafesummit.com/south/2015/

It started with a trim, and ended up a major cull. I just went through my Facebook friends list and removed a whole lot of people. From the time I started using Facebook many years ago, I've come to realise the way I use it has changed and the options for connecting with people have also evolved and grown. So it made sense that the people I'm connected to through that particular network also needs to evolve.
If we haven't spoken in years, or I really didn't know you very well, I removed you.
If you were more of an "acquaintance" or "professional connection" than a close friend, I removed you.
If I'm already connected to you on Google+ or Twitter or Instagram, and our main interactions happen on those other platforms, I removed you.
If we've never met in person or shared a beer together, then I've probable removed you.
So if I removed you, please realise it's nothing personal, it's just a result of the way I'm using Facebook these days. I spend FAR more time here on Google Plus, which has become my favourite social platform. I still use Twitter and Instagram a fair bit, and I still see many of you over there, probably much more than I see you on Facebook.

It's all just part of the evolving way we use social networks, where each one has a fairly specific use case. And now that Facebook allows "following" as well as "friending" I think it makes sense to have the occasional trim.

I felt more obligated to post when I was on Facebook since I had so many close friends and family connections on that network. Here on Google+ I feel like I can be myself.

My son Alex astounds me sometimes. He is such an intelligent, insightful and ethical young man, although his quiet, understated personality sometimes belies just how deep those still waters really run.

He and I are not connected on Facebook, because I'm his dad and that's just not cool, but this public post from his Facebook feed is moving, powerful and worth a read, even if I am just seeing it now, a few months too
The events in Sydney yesterday were a tragedy and of course our thoughts and prayers go out to the innocent bystanders who became trapped in, and...

It's the joy of being the father of a gifted son and daughter that I share. It's nice to think all the work paid off. Now we stand back and let them run with the ball. He has a great expressive talent. (well done mum and dad).

Our new favourite sushi place. Simple and unpretentious, but delicious food. Always fresh and tasty, and well made. Big fan of the Crunch Roll, but really, everything we get from here is good.

The food in the bistro is Ok but the prices are quite ridiculous for a club dining experience. I used to eat here quite a bit a few years ago when the prices were reasonable but hardly visit at all any more... I simply don't want to pay good restaurant prices for an average bistro dining experience. Servings are not large and the food is very average.

We eat here a fair bit (both eat in and take away ) and the food is always good. Fresh, hot, tasty. Prices are reasonable, service is friendly and fast, and the food is delicious. The decor is quite nice too.

Meh. It's a McDonalds, right? So you should get the same consistent, predictable service and food that you get at every McDonalds. Except you don't. This one feels seedy and slummy, the service is consistently average at best. Every time I go there the local police are in there picking up food, which I find strange on a number of levels. Overall, just a really ordinary Maccas. If you really feel you want some Maccas, I'd drive down to the nearby Padstow store as its cleaner, better staffed and always feels like a nicer experience. Which is weird considering McDonalds shouldn't really matter where you go, it should be basically the same.

Great Indian food. Always delicious and hot, we get takeaway from here quite a bit and the food is consistently excellent. The butter chicken is amazing, as are most of their curries. The ambience of the eat-in experience is pretty ordinary, but the food is great.

Good pizza at reasonable prices. Friendly people who run the place. Great local delivery service. They also run a loyalty program that gives you a free pizza every so often. Overall our favourite pizza place in the local area.
