An excellent article appears in today’s Guardian newspaper, by George Monbiot, highlighting the grotesque factory farming of chickens. The true horror for me, having kept chickens for years and being an advocate for improving not only their welfare –…

The things I have heard and seen for myself in such factory farms is beyond disgusting and horribly inhumane...chickens that are so fattened up for their meat at such young ages, that most cannot walk more than a few steps before they become exhausted and collapse due to their heavy weight, young age and lack of space in which to exercise. They become unbalanced since their breasts are much larger than naturally intended, since many are being farmed for the breast meat, so sad and wrong.
Many of the farmers here in USA that are working for large chicken meat companies, are against these practices, but if and when they speak out, or complain, the company cuts the number of birds the farmers can receive, as well as filing poor reviews to management, flat out lying that the complainant farm is neglecting their flock. Some would call that straight blackmail!
I spoke with several breast meat farmers, old timers, and was told that it was not like this 20 or more years back, at least they never saw birds that could barely walk a metre before becoming too exhausted to walk.

My pet chicken-keeping friends have raised £410 so far towards their goal of getting secure fencing, CCTV and a commemorative plaque on my allotment plot. In 24 hours. Gobsmacked. The comments donors are making had me in tears, thanking me for what I do and saying they want to give back for the energy I put in to the cause of chicken welfare. I'm going to take photos and videos before and after work and share them with donors, so they can see what a transformation results from their help. I am no less angry and hurt by Elvis' killing. I don't think I'll ever be anything else when I think of what happened. But there are good people - LOTS of good people! I must've said thank you a hundred times and those two words don't seem adequate for what's happening.

Tears of happiness at the kindness and generosity of the #chickensaspets community! Take a look: http://fundrazr.com/stories/19KFbd/tw/b4gAsc #chickens   #petchickens   #communitiesagainstcrime
I was going to update this evening after posting last night, thinking it would be nice to celebrate the £50 mark if we reached it in a day. But in 13 hours we have reached £370! That's 37% of our goal in less than a day! Amazing. Please tell everyone! Wneed to keep this momentum and show just how many people care about pet chickens and those who help pet chickens. Thank you, Diane.

This is the drawing of Elvis, by a lady called Jacky in the Chickens As Pets community on Facebook. I think of the time she took to draw this, keeping in her mind all the time the way Elvis was killed and the impact of his death on me, and I well up. To think anyone would do this for me, it's incredible. I will treasure this drawing and the care and concern that went into it. Thank you, Jacky. x

Please be careful when seeking advice on the Web. A site can appear legitimate - professional and slick - and still put out dangerous nonsense, framing it with a single vet's approval, for information that is deadly. In this case, advice given to put down a hen that lays a lash egg. NO WAY. I've had hens lay lash eggs, they've gone on to lay perfectly OK eggs afterward and live happily for many years. Best place to get sound advice on pet-hen-keeping: the CHICKENS AS PETS book!

I took Orlando, my Serama cockerel, to see my parents. They're very sad about what happened to Elvis, so I thought Orlando would cheer them up - and me - with his cheeky ways. He enjoyed one of my mum's cupcakes and entertained my dad. Orlando always has a set-to with the cockerel that lives in the dark reflective glass of their TV cabinet. He thinks the other cockerel is very handsome but has the gall to copy everything he does, which he finds very annoying..,,

The Chickens As Pets community has been a huge comfort and support to me since my little Elvis was killed by intruders last week. Today, a lady called Jacky did a lovely drawing of him (I will share it in my next post) and they've started a page to raise funds to help me make my plot safe and secure in Elvis' memory. Kindness against cruelty. The web address doesn't roll off the tongue easily but it's a wonderful page and the words had me in tears all over again. #chickensaspets #chickensofinstagram #chickens #cockerels #fundraiser #kindness #animals #birds
Andrew is an author and campaigner for improved chicken welfare and rescues hens from factory farms. His cockerel, Elvis, was killed by intruders. Please help the online Chickens As Pets community raise funds for fencing, CCTV and a commemorative plaque.

My blog post says it all, really. Devastated. Overwhelmed by supportive, kind comments coming on via Facebook, Instagram and Twitter so far, as I've been working to get the word out, app by app. 1000s. It really does help give me strength right now. I'm grateful. x

Thank you, Paige. I'm often of the same opinion but since Elvis was killed, I've had so many lovely kind messages from so many people, it has made me realise there is a lot of love in the world and we mustn't let the wicked blind us to that. x

I can’t claim credit for this recipe as I found it online many years ago, I don’t know where, back when I had an ex-caged hen wasting away. If I ever find the source I will, of course, edit this post and credit it. I’ve only just rediscovered it while…

It's really amazing to think my book is recommended reading on the courses run by the lovely Jo Barlow, a long-time rescuer of caged hens.
