Celia Gamrath, Cook County Circuit Court judge in the Domestic Relations Division: In 1979, the Illinois Supreme Court in Hewitt v. Hewitt declared an unmarried relationship with partners cohabiting to be illicit, immoral and contrary to public policy. In 36 years, Illinois public policy has changed dramatically — and so has the law, opening up property rights and equitable remedies for unmarried couples.

Olivia T. Luk and Brian E. Haan of Niro Haller & Niro: Fashion design patents protect clothing all around you — or even on you. Intellectual property rights safeguard the fashion world by way of copyrights, trademarks and design patents, among other legal protections. But what do design patents cover? How are they different from other patents?

Lyndsay A. Markley: It took some harsh realities to learn that before saying yes to partnership, you should first take measures to investigate your investment in the business and to protect yourself throughout the course of the partnership’s existence — and in the event that you move on. Here’s my advice to any attorney thinking of making the jump from associate to partner.

Opening Statement by Pat Milhizer: When Gov. Bruce Rauner campaigned with the 'shake up Springfield' theme, there weren’t many ideas — other than a potential tax on business services — that would specifically affect the practice of law. Now, he’s following up ... with a series of proposals that have been labeled a 'declaration of war' by the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association. Let’s take ’em in order.

Corporate boardrooms haven’t always been the friendliest places for lawyers. Directorships often go to CEOs and other people with business-heavy backgrounds, not ones with J.D.s. Thanks to a changing perspective on the work that general counsels do for other companies, though, these prime positions may soon become more comfortable for attorneys to seek out.

Seth Darmstadter of K&L Gates: Working, professional households do not have time to grocery shop, prep and cook healthy dinners on weeknights. And if you, like me, have young children, forget about it. Fresh, healthy, affordable home-cooked weeknight meals are an impracticality, if not an impossibility. Until now.

While sleek and modern by traditional law firm standards, it’s not so much the actual office space of Siprut P.C. that stands out. It’s the firm’s culture in that space. Firm founder Joseph Siprut, the progenitor of the culture, is a striking deviation from expectation himself.

Alternative-fee arrangements generate a lot of conversation but not a lot of action. At least, that’s what general counsels are seeing. But some law firms are beginning to walk the new-type-of-pricing walk by creating positions for staff focused on making creative billing of clients work in the short- and long-term.
