Newly wed couples believe that their marriage will last forever. As we know, however, is that close to 50% of all marriages fail and end in divorce. Divorce can have a traumatic effect on kids. Parents need to focus on providing as much stability and consistency for their children in the event divorce occurs. As one judge used to say: "Divorce only dissolves the bonds of marriage; you're parents forever."

In 2016 and 2017, there were major changes to the Illinois divorce laws. The new laws changed the grounds for divorce and how maintenance (spousal support/alimony) is calculated. There were also major overhauls to custody and visitation of children.

Over the last several years, there has been an increase in the request for Prenuptial Agreements. A Prenuptial Agreement, which is a legally binding contract, can be beneficial for many ready to tie the knot. It can protect assets and reduce the threat of litigation down the road. Better hurry up and get your divorce finalized! If you are in the midst of a divorce and will be paying maintenance (alimony) to your spouse, there's a huge incentive to wrap up your case before the end of the year. The new tax law will not allow maintenance payments to be deducted from the payor's taxes beginning in 2019.
