The Science Behind Chicago Botanic Garden's Titan Arum (corpse flower) Collection June 1 @ 1:30 CST

In this live event the Chicago Botanic Garden education staff take you behind the scenes to meet our collection of Titan arums, or "corpse flowers", including "Sprout" which bloomed in April, "Spike", and "Alice". See living corpse flowers in multiple stages from seedling to fruiting and learn about this plant's remarkable life cycle. We'll also challenge you to figure out what pollinates some more common flowers and understand how the corpse flower uses extraordinary strategies to attract pollinators from long distances in the Indonesian rain forest. Best for grades 3-8, all welcome!

For REU Participants, #summer was time to get to work learning. #sciencefirst #collegefirst #NSF

On a recent day in Chicago, with the sun beating down and temperatures climbing into the 90s, many college students idling through their last week at home headed for the beach. Lounging about was not on the agenda for the undergraduates gathered at the…

Bonus! #CBGSpike produced #pollen to create more #titanarum & taught our visitors more about #botany. #STEM #IAmABotanist

Did you have a flashback to science class when you saw Spike, the titan arum? I sure did. At my not-really-science-minded high school, botany (the study of plants) was taught as a subsection of biology (the study of all life) class. During the botany…
