When Denise Lee wanted to perform more cabaret but found fewer and fewer places to do so, she didn’t sit on her hands. She started her own cabaret arts production company, started an advocacy network, wrote new shows for herself, booked shows for other artists, and test drove different venues to pave the way for other artists like her. And she says she’s only just getting started.

From pulpits to performance halls — singer, songwriter, musician, actor Gary Lynn Floyd breathes love from the stage. His music has touched thousands with messages of hope and trust. And he, by proxy, has become caretaker for an audience reminded hearts mend and love wins.

Not many people start life living in Oak Cliff, move to New York to perform in a Tony Award-winning Broadway production, and then move to London. Cedric Neal did. And it was excruciating.

Tracy Fulton has a respectable enough job. He’s a private banker in a very tony part of town. If he were to divulge his client list, you might see names most of us are used to seeing only on TV or maybe a building. He sees them as contacts in his cell phone. But every third Thursday of the month, he swaps out his grey three-piece suit for a tuxedo. He puts down his smartphone for a microphone. And that’s when this buttoned-up banker-by-day turns into Mr. Cabaret at night.

Like a lot of people over the past century, Robert Swann first came to the historic St. Paul United Methodist Church in Dallas, Texas looking for something of the Divine to fill parts of his heart left humanly empty. He found something but not what he expected. The church became his family. And jazz became his mission.

Casie Caldwell has a knack for creating unique restaurants people love. She made us rethink our expectations of a salad with her chain of Greenz Salads restaurants. And now she’s making us rethink “pop-up” with her Trinity Groves restaurant where the kitchen has a permanent address, but the chefs are around for a limited time only.

The church was Paul Jentz’s home, his passion, and his profession. The congregation was his family. When Paul came out, he lost all of it. Amanda Schulz was in college and never saw him again. 20 years later, they reunited — at Chef & Song.

Paul Gomez has been on stage, at the Winspear Opera House with the Dallas Opera, six times. The first was with none other than Denyce Graves. I should also mention, Paul doesn’t sing. We talk about it over coffee.
