The beach is nice but don't neglect the hiking trails. This area has some of the highest plant diversity in the state including plants more typical of places to the south and west. There are lots of great wildflowers in mid to late April. You can also find yellow oak here - rare in Vermont.
A wonderful park with some of the highest plant diversity in the country... really special to have it so close to the suburban wasteland. My favorite places are solstice Canyon and Mishe Moqua trail but they are all worth checking out as well as the state parks in the same area.
Really nice people and yes they gave us free cotton candy! Yummy sugar on snow too (not free but cheaper than some places). This was on Maple Weekend so I'm not sure what they offer other times but I'm sure you can stop by to get some syrup.
