We all wish there were parts of the design process we could automate and simplify. Our new icon library and device metrics tool aim to do just that.

The Icon Library (google.com/design/icons) lets you quickly browse and export icons from the material design icon library, containing over 750 icons. You can export into formats that work well for the web, Android, or iOS.

The new Device Metrics Tool (google.com/design/tool/devices) lets you quickly look up screen specs like screen sizes in DP units, perfect for deciding on an artboard size for mockups. You can even sort by any metric, so you could see the full list in increasing physical screen size.

Check out our latest additions to our material design resources at google.com/design/resources, and let us know what other tools you’d like to see in the comments!

So much yes! And it won't be locked down to M either.

Imagine a single sign-on system like the Chrome password manager, but for apps. You log into an app once, it's tied to your Google account, and then bam - you're logged in.

Case in point - Netflix just got the update. From now on, I should be automatically logged into it on new devices.
Buried in the newly-located Google settings is a curious area called "Smart Lock Passwords." While it doesn't make its function very clear, once you try to... by Jacob Long in Google, News

This could be awesome! If I can move apps to external storage connected via OTG then maybe I'll get the Nexus Player and hook up an external HDD/ssd! Would fix it's one big floor (lack of internal memory) and make it worth the purchase!

Adoptable Storage Devices!

The M Preview released earlier today has a powerful new feature that allows you to "adopt" an external storage device (like an SD card or USB drive), enabling users to move both app code (APKs) and private app data to that device.  When a storage device is adopted, the platform wraps it in a layer of encryption and formats it similar to internal storage.  (In contrast, the original Apps-on-SD feature launched back in Froyo could only move app code, not private app data.)

Also, to help users free up internal storage space, they can choose to migrate their "primary shared storage" (living at /sdcard) to any adopted device.

If you flash the preview build onto a phone/tablet, you can enable the adoption feature for testing with USB OTG devices by using the command described here:

http://developer.android.com/preview/behavior-changes.html#behavior-adoptable-storage

Normally only storage devices in long-term stable locations (like an internal SD card slot inside a phone/tablet, or a USB drive attached to a TV) are supported for adoption.

Along with all of this work, the platform now has much better support for USB OTG storage devices (think USB flash drives).  When a new device is inserted, a notification appears offering to "browse" that device along with simple options to manage/copy contents.

Please kick the tires and file bugs!  :)  #io15 #android

The colours and focusing look decent but the bitrate appears too low. The G3 also had this problem. It just the software configuration though and a mod was made with the G3 to increase it so I imagine we'll (hopefully) see the same here or better still an increase from a software update from LG!
