Now, if we can only make updates to an outdated hiring process, which should include concise job descriptions, educate how to adequately distinguish between those with digital marketing skills and those without, to align with the new roles technology has created, we could perhaps close the gap between the perceived lack of skill-set and the enormous talent that is available, so we can all win in 2014.
Perhaps one of the most insightful posts I've read to date on the topic: http://jpowellpr.com/hiringmanagerspayattention/
I dove head first into digital marketing out of necessity more than a decade ago. As the owner of a small business, I had virtually no advertising budget, but still needed to promote my efforts and generate leads. In my very limited free time, I immersed myself in anything and everything I could find related to digital marketing and social media, and began applying what I learned. Very quickly, not only was my business thriving, but so was my interest in this expanding field. Later, I obtained a B.S. in Internet marketing and began working as a freelance contractor helping other businesses and agencies across the country achieve the same success I achieved.
I've worked in all facets of the industry from freelance to major corporation and my most current role is Marketing Development Specialist within a dynamic organization in the Phoenix area. And whether it’s promotional work for external clients or internal corporate, I pride myself on my ability to recognize and articulate a distinct voice for every project.
From consulting and defining processes, public relations, social media and digital marketing strategies, SEO and SEM campaigns, data analysis, integrated marketing campaigns, creative video concepts, internet marketing research, online consumer behavior and social listening - I've done it. And that’s not always restricted to online marketing. I've also coordinated, designed and produced unique promotions within traditional marketing as well as been involved in planning events that incorporate social media.
No matter where I've been, I've produced top notch work because I’m dedicated to making sure each piece stands out from the crowd. I’m a strong believer in the delivery of the right message to the right audience at the right time in the right place.
