In this publication I sing the song "La Rebelión" or no "No Le Pegue A La Negra," from the article Listen To Music In Spanish and Learn. This song is about an African slave who defended his wife when the Spanish slaveowner hit her.

Listening to Spanish music will help you learn a lot more than just Spanish. One of my older Spanish music collections is called "Margarita Hot Summer Salsa" and while all the songs on the album are great, a song that really caught my attention was "La Rebelión" or "No Le Pegue A La Negra" which literally means don't hit my black woman.

Many African slaves were brought to Cartagena Colombia and sold, a history that is deeply buried about the Caribbean coast of this country. A lot of latinos of African descent descended from these African Colombians. This song depicts the story of an African slave who rebelled against his slaveowner because the slaveowner hit his wife. People could hear him from far away saying "no le pegue a la negra."

Read this post to learn about this song, plus an Afro-Cuban, Celia Cruz, who, although now deceased, also made very touching thought provoking music.
