It sound slike the Hugo Awards Hijacking is more akin to Gamergate than trying to repair the voting model. "Hey, Hugo Awards are broken, so let's break them some more!" Great move, Correia. (Can you hear the sarcasm?)

The prizes have been targeted by voting blocks opposed to progressive efforts to recognize more women and writers of color. But trying to undo change in an increasingly diverse world is futile.

Excellent find. Easy to remember. There are a couple of things I'd like to point out.

First, the bit about calculating ballpark distance to the horizon is metric—that is, distance_in_km = sqrt(13 * altitude_in_meters). For customary units, distance_in_miles = sqrt(1.5 * altitude_in_feet).

Second, watch out for the mistyped URL for the Wikipedia article on horizon. It's not friendly.

Busy putting together some set pieces for "Banestorm: Orcs in the North!" for our periodic gaming group. We started this campaign some time in 2011 using GURPS 4e. I've taken some cues from +Chris Tregenza on how to build out a campaign. As much as I would love to jump ship and switch over to +6d6 system, I think we're "stuck" with GURPS for the time being.

In 2011, GURPS was a relatively "new" system to us all. I had run a Vampire/Werewolf campaign with it, but we wanted to do something more akin to classical fantasy. It's an interesting system, and the materials are well written. I just find it clunky at times, with special cases and a plethora of rules. You really have to study up in order to run it effectively.

After 9 years, I received an email about a game I wrote and shared on the internet. Since my old website is dead, I decided to update the license to CC Attribution 4.0 International and check the source and PDF up to GitLab. For your enjoyment, I re-present to you Domino Knights:

"Domino Knights is an alternative to the numerous battle-focused,
collectable card games on the market today.  Instead of special cards,
it uses games that you may already have in your bookshelf: a set of
dominos, a deck of cards, and pencil and paper.  The concept of the
game is simply to defeat your opponents in battle using Knights you've
trained from the Peasants of the countryside. This game is designed
for two to six players."

Adventure Teaser for the upcoming March 7th campaign! Editing in #Emacs  org-mode for extra awesomeness. Once the adventure is complete, and I've run my guys through it, I'll publish it to github (or similar site) under Creative Commons Attributions Share Alike 3.0. Stay tuned! Open  #RPG  culture for the win!

"The very center of Northern controlled lands have been invaded by a
large force of Orcs, a feat which should never have been
possible. How they infiltrated so deeply without being detected, and
how they had they been able to sack the fishing village, Lake Katla,
so completely is unfathomable.  It is certain they could not have
progressed so far without aide. The River Town of Herdis is under
siege from the South and West by the horde, protected by a high
palisade and the banks of River Gunnhavatr and Herdis River,
  respectively.

With the aide of the adventurers, the town has withstood wave after
wave of attack over the course of two days. By cover of night, orcs
have been observed walking out of a teleport gate in the nearby
southern woods, a gate of ghastly design. An attempt at establishing
a gate within the very walls of Herdis was thwarted, and a broken
mirror was discovered, an ancient Christian relic vandalized by an
evil hand into something far more powerful and sinister.

While the town remains on the alert, a brave set of adventurers,
with the help of a Stout captain, have set out to investigate this
discovered gate more closely and to hopefully break the Orcish
  invasion."

The +6d6 system has captured me... Maybe it's due to my chosen alias, runswithd6s, or the fact that I've been searching for a simple, elegant, and hackable system for years. We've all tried to build "that system" when we realized that the D&D (D20) family of systems just didn't address that "really cool thing my character should be able to do", or that crunchy systems like GURPS has too many moving parts and obscure rules to quickly build balanced characters. "I add the enhancement 'reduced time' to my new advantage, but with the limitation of 'only during the full moon', because I'm a weredogmouse. That reduces my character point cost for the advantage by 50%..."

Reading through +6d6 Core has me giggling insanely as all of the pieces fall into place. Those complicate "what if" or "how do I resolve" questions are boiled down to their essentials in a simple answer: d6s, of course.
The simple, fast, flexible roleplaying game.
