USSD - unstructured supplementary service data - is currently the best available communications technology to deliver mobile financial services to low-income customers.

Having tried rolling out micro insurance programs on USSD platform i find the same to be rather expensive and given that it times out within 3 minutes the usage is cannot be effective where large information is required to either register or sign in to use the platform. The rural and peri urban dwellers are not very literate which also means they are are not phone "sarvy" which hampers end user ability in application of a USSD  based program
