Pride of place will be occupied by the CEDAR DNS 2™ dialogue noise suppressor, which has quickly become a standard for live broadcast and location sound. CDA will also be demonstrating the flagship CEDAR Cambridge™ audio restoration system plus the groundbreaking CEDAR DNS 8 Live™ dialogue noise suppressor.

Joel Chia, Sales Manager of CDA Pro-Audio (Singapore) says, "We are thrilled once again to be representing CEDAR Audio at Broadcast Asia. CEDAR is the leader in the world of noise suppression and audio restoration and, over the years, I have come to learn about and grown to appreciate the usefulness of their signal processors. Every year, CEDAR manages to create tools that are not only operator friendly but (more importantly) very effective at what they were engineered to do."

UK: CEDAR Audio announces CEDAR Studio™ for iLok

In advance of the NAB SHOW, LAS VEGAS, USA: Following incompatibilities between OS X 10.12 (Sierra), Pro Tools® and its existing HSP dongle, CEDAR Audio is pleased to announce CEDAR Studio for iLok for release in Q2 2017.

Gordon Reid, Managing Director of CEDAR Audio explains, "We are very grateful to our customers who have been delaying their upgrades to Sierra for many months while we tried to find a solution to this problem. However, it became clear some time ago that it was unlikely that we would be able to continue with the HSP dongle for Pro Tools users on the Mac. We have therefore been working on CEDAR Studio for iLok since 2016 and feel that it's time to let everyone know that this will be available not too far in the future. Adopting the iLok will also make it possible for us to offer additional benefits such as downloadable product and demonstration software to run on existing dongles. While there are still some details to be ironed out, we should have everything in place by the summer, and we'll make a further announcement as soon as firm information is available."

GERMANY: The first Netflix production in Germany... "How did we ever cope with recording location sound without CEDAR?"

Matthias Richter is a production sound mixer who has worked on many successful cinema and TV productions. Most recently, he has been working alongside Oscar winning director, Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, and is now shooting the first German Netflix series Dark, on which he is using the CEDAR DNS 2 dialogue noise suppressor for the first time.

"Like many of his colleagues, Matthias was initially very critical about using dialogue noise suppression on set, and we discussed the pros and cons at length before the first test", explained Uwe Seyfert from CEDAR Deutschland. "But having tried it for the first two days of shooting, Richter's spontaneous reaction was, 'How did we ever cope with recording location sound without CEDAR?'".

Richter continued enthusiastically, "We had to shoot near a transformer station and normally, without the DNS 2, I would have rated that sound recording as a guide track, meaning that this scene would have required full ADR. Using the DNS 2, I could reduce the noise floor to a level that was just about acceptable. But even in quieter places I now use the DNS 2 - for example, to reduce the fan noise of our two Alexa 65 cameras - providing a noise free dialogue recording now. While mixing, I sometimes switch back and forth between the CEDAR mix and the pure PFL signal without noise suppression. My boom operator still doesn't believe that this is the real sound on set. The director also preferred the sound of the processed audio after an A/B comparison. Nonetheless, to keep all of the options open to the postproduction guys, we also record the individual tracks unprocessed so that they can be used if they prefer."

He concluded, "The DNS 2 is really worth every penny, if only for giving my ears some relief on the set and me the confidence to know that the audio is going to be usable."
