Chris Rock's bit on baseball for HBO's Real Sports wasn't that long ago, so the timing of the Red Sox and James Taylor teaming up to cement the the stereotype of the baseball fan as an older white guy seemed particularly on point ...

I had no idea this was a thing. 17 episodes ran ... right around the time I was born. 17!  If you only watch a couple minutes of one (uncomfortably racist, undoubtedly cruel to animals) show with an all chimp cast today this should probably be it.

I'm glad he's running. Not because he'll push Hillary to the left. (I think that political calculus is suspect anyways, he's more likely to give Hillary cover to move right.) I'm glad he's running because he's now the (soon-to-be) declared candidate who best represents my interests and -- unlike Dr. Jill Stein -- can't easily be ignored by the mainstream media.

Give'em hell, Bernie.
Sanders genuinely, sincerely, does not care about optics. He is the rarest of Washington animals, a completely honest person. If he's motivated by anything other than a desire to use his influence to protect people who can't protect themselves, I've never seen it. Bernie Sanders is the kind of ...

All he needs is Warren to not sellout to the Hillary train and he has a solid chance at being the nominee, IMO.

One day I hope to make the list of Top Public Intellectuals In My Own Home ...
Thomas Piketty; Yanis Varoufakis; Naomi Klein; Russell Brand; Paul Krugman; Arundhati Roy; Jürgen Habermas; Daniel Kahneman; John Gray; Atul Gawande. For me, the utility of the list is in identifying where I've got blind spots, because there are six names on that list I couldn't enter into a ...

Love hearing Debs' words spoken by a contemporary politician ...
Click play on track 205 in the link above to hear a brief snippet of Sen. Sanders reading Debs on WWI. I haven't seen it, but I understand Sanders has a portrait of Debs hanging in his office in the Capitol. Give'em hell, Bernie. Posted by Cdog Zilla at 7:00 AM · Email ThisBlogThis!

#HarrisChomsky  > #MayPac  (even if both events left a lot to be desired)
On April 26 of this year, Harris reached out to Chomsky over some comments he had made referring to Harris as a “religious fanatic who worships the state.” Except, well, Chomsky didn't directly call him that, he was speaking of New Atheists writ large, and arguably Christopher Hitchens ...

Why do we need so many superheroes? What super power do we want? What agency are do we feel we're lacking?  Lots of related questions that, at the risk of giving a wildly oversimplified answer, would seem to point to widespread feelings of powerlessness rooted (in America, at least) in almost complete disenfranchisement. Or, put another way, if we look at the studies that show public opinion has virtually no impact on public policy, it's hard not to conclude there are so many superhero stories being told because those of us that can vote feel like our votes don't matter. Sure we can decide between oligarchy's iron fist (Republicans) or oligarchy's velvet glove (Democrats). Our government feels alien to most of us, acting in ways we generally find morally objectionable. We want the power to change things, and it looks like we're going to need super powers (or billions of dollars and super powers) to do that.

As wealth and political power concentrate, it doesn't seem entirely unreasonable to expect superhero fantasies to proliferate. I'm sure that's not the only dynamic at play, and I wouldn't rule out the possibility there's another way to look at this which gives a better, more direct rational for what appears to be our insatiable appetite for superhero stories ... but, if Piketty had included a graph in Capital in the 21st Century that mapped the rise of the MCU against wealth inequality, I wouldn't be surprised if the forecasts for the future showed the lines moving in parallel.

Accountability. We need accountability all around.
Yes, there is a lot to be argued, debated, addressed. And this moment, as inevitable as it has sometimes seemed, can still, in the end, prove transformational, if not redemptive for our city. Changes are necessary and voices need to be heard. All of that is true and all of that is still possible ...

Introduction
Blogging primarily about Doctor Who while I watch (and re-watch) the entire series.

Sure, I could have chosen any number of other shows to bounce my interest in philosophy, history, progressive politics, secularism, and pop culture off; but, while others have burned brighter for periods of time, no other series has held my interest for so long. Nor is another likely to.

I've been a few times now and can heartily recommend the pulled pork and Aviator Monster (pulled pork, brisket, and bacon) sandwiches. The brisket in the sandwich was fine, not as jerky-like as the serving E.B. got in his/her April 1, 2011 review. Friendly service at the tables and at the bar. It was a little slow the first time, but that's to be expected in the first month of a new restaurant's operation. Has been quicker both times since that first visit. The baked beans have great flavor and the fries were very good. Will definitely keep going back for more.

The new library is being built around the corner and looks like it will be a beautiful facility. The existing library is desperately undersized but I mostly request books online and just run in to pick them up and drop off on my way to and from work. The library staff are always very friendly and helpful. It's a pain getting our double stroller through the front door, but I'm hoping that won't be an issue in the new building. All in all it's nice little small town library.
