"It's best to not confuse optimism with hope. Optimism is a psychological attitude toward life. Hope goes further. It is an anchor that one hurls toward the future, it's what lets you pull on the line and reach what you're aiming for [and head in] the right direction." - Pope Francis

Since 1905, Catholic Extension has helped spread hope by contributing more than $500 million to strengthen and support under-resourced Catholic communities across the US.

Now it's your turn - simply share this post and help spread awareness of our mission to build faith, inspire hope and ignite change.

“A good shepherd should have the smell of his sheep.”

Bishop Tyson from the Diocese of Yakima, Washington, sends his seminarians to “work among the people” in the summer – picking apples, harvesting asparagus or working in packinghouses.

Check out this little historical artifact we came across today!

In a certificate dated July 31, 1911, the Bishop of Nashville confirmed that roofing and plastering had begun on St. Mary's Catholic School (Johnson City, TN) - and that funds from a Catholic Extension donor were being applied towards it's construction. A rough sketch of the project was included on the back of the certificate.

Today we continue our legacy of supporting and strengthening the Church's presence across the United States - though with a bit more technology! ;)

This week's meditation from Bishop Houck, ‪#‎Catholic‬ Extension President Emeritus:

We Catholics are living through our special Year of Faith. Faith is a wonderful gift but a gift that we must accept, nurture, live and share. Pope Francis is giving such inspiration to us and the world enkindling that faith. In fact, his words and example can light again the fire of faith in all of us but hopefully and especially where faith has dwindled.

This week we remember people who have lived this faith as a priority in their time and inspire the same for us in our time. Think of Mary and the way she responded with faith to God’s call in her life. Reflect on Peter, James, and John at the Transfiguration with Jesus. Then we have Pope Sixtus II and others who were martyrs, Saint Dominic, Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein) and Saint Lawrence, deacon and martyr.

Jesus calls us to follow him and his way of life as part of a community of faith and love. We are part of a cherished community, the saints who have lived and shared the faith and gone to eternal rewards. We are part of the community who has the call to live the faith and build the kingdom in our time. We have lots to do these days! Jesus, help us to be authentic witnesses of Christian hope and joy.

Bishop William R. Houck
