In order for life to come into being,  amino acids must be organized in particular and perplexingly complicated sequences that literally defy insane odds. It’s almost completely beyond our powers of imagination to conceive of how complicated this sequencing is and how often it must be repeated; but this is only the initial stage in a dauntingly complex assembly of required component parts.

In an incalculably intricate procedure, protein molecules are then created by linking the correctly sequenced amino acids into what are called peptides. Hundreds of thousands of specific proteins are required in this process. Nucleic acids and other essential structures are additionally involved, with all these diverse constituent parts then coming together in perfect synchronous assembly.

The odds against this miraculous assemblage  taking place have actually been calculated as one chance in ten followed by enough zeros to fill an eighty page book.  And  while  it isn’t at all certain  exactly how such a calculation could possibly be reached and suspect that the figure may be exaggerated somewhat,  suffice to say that our genesis was such an unbelievably unlikely event that there would appear to be a so far unidentified component involved – an element that somehow facilitated the extraordinary coalescence of life’s various constituent ingredients.   Without this missing piece of the puzzle we remain no more than a mere fluke of arbitrary chance: a by-product of random chemical  configurations.  I think not.

Of course I can understand the predicament that scientists are in, after all the inference that unplanned “luck” is an insufficient and somewhat eccentric cause for our existence leaves, so it would seem, only one other possibility: God and the ever-present and often contentious religious equation. But just as science fails to sufficiently explain our existence, religion, on the other hand, tends to smother us with comforting platitudes and obscuring dogma designed to stop us asking difficult questions of subjects that are beyond our ability to fully comprehend. God’s mysterious ways are just that; mysterious. End of story - it is not for us to know!

The argument between science and religion is interminable: blind chance versus  blind faith.  And so it goes.  But could there  be an alternative?   Is there, as I have implied,  an essential and totally vital element missing from the scenario we have been presented with,  and if  this is so, then what exactly is it?     We need to know, for it could lead us to a more viable  explanation of our existence.

Could it be that we, ourselves, represent the missing link? Interestingly enough this is not a metaphysical assumption, but one put forward by some of the world’s leading physicists.

Niels Bohr, an architect of quantum theory and one of the most respected names in physics, stated that: “There are fundamental limitations met with in atomic physics of the objective existence of phenomena independent of their means of observation.” In what became known as the Copenhagen Interpretation (named after the group of scientists who worked with Bohr in this Danish city), it appears that despite all our many limitations, that reality is very much contingent upon us as “observers” of that reality.

Eugene Wigner, another extremely important physicist, specifically cites mind as the means by which reality is “created” and implies that prior to the arrival of intelligent life, the universe didn’t meaningfully or actually exist at all.

Referring to the apparent influence human consciousness has concerning our material reality, Paul Davies - the very well-respected British theoretical physicist and astrophysicist  - states that:  “Taken to its extreme, this idea implies that the universe only achieves a concrete existence as a result of this perception – it is created by its own inhabitants.”

One question immediately leaps to mind though:  if, as most scientists agree, the universe is purely the result of a self-actuating event that randomly occurred, how then are we to interpret the assertion that humankind then has such a profound influence over its actual material existence? If consciousness is required to “actualize” matter then it is completely and absolutely logical to then assume that it was also somehow influential in the actual transformative or “creative” moment of the universe.

But now we see a problem. If our consciousness is so influential in creating our reality, perhaps we should ask ourselves how that reality is.  And if we look around us and see so much pain and suffering in the world - our constant wars and manipulations - then maybe we should therefore be examining the state of that consciousness which is said to be so determinate.
