Third Time Lucky - The Tree In The Lake

The first time I edited this image, it was very well received. It was also incredibly pink. We're talking very vivid might-melt-your-eyeballs pink. At the time (a couple of years ago), I loved it.

The second time I edited this image was a few months back. I tried to change it to match me a little more. Though I still held back a lot and kept it pink? Why? I think it was a fear of people disliking the look of it compared to the first version. Rejection's always tough, but especially so when you're still scared of revealing your true self through your work.

The third time I have edited this is the final time. I decided to go all out and make it mine. In my style. It is finally "done" and I'm really happy with it. It's taken me a LONG time to find my style and to know what I like. It's taken me even longer to build up the confidence in my work to edit in a way that makes me happy rather than appealing to the masses. Most people sit firmly on the right side of the colour wheel, enjoying pretty warm tones. Me? I sit well on the left amongst the blues greens and violets. Neither is more right or wrong than the other - it's just your style, and whichever colour palette you prefer is absolutely fine 😊

The Flocking Tree

Sorry (again!) for the lack of posting recently. I've been busy juggling a move up to Scotland, game dev projects and freelance so haven't had much time to work on my images in the last few weeks.

I've been working on this image whenever I've had a few hours to spare. This is an awesome lone tree from the Pentland Hills, south-west of Edinburgh. As always, there's a copious amout of Photoshop and compositing in this!

If you'd like to see a higher res copy or perhaps purchase a print to help me be able to spend more time creating shots like this, you can do so over on my portfolio:

Today I photographed animals for the first time in a very long time. I have missed it, and it was fun to put the 90mm f2.8 through its paces! It obviously doesn't have the range of my old 70-200 f4, but oh my, is it a much nicer lens! I took a lot of photos but decided to edit this one first. I can't decide if he's just deep in thought, or feeling a bit melancholy...

Last week I took the plunge and traded in my Sony 70-200mm f4 for the Sony 90mm f2.8. Since then, I've been having a LOT of fun relearning how to do macro photography. I've always enjoyed macro - one of my favourite things about photography is showing things that are otherwise overlooked.

Here's one of my first images using the Sony 90mm f2.8 on the Sony a7ii.

Done a major website overhaul to make it more visual and less text heavy on the front page. My hoping is that this makes it much more visually appealing and easier to find articles related to particular images!

The darker colour scheme suits my images much better than the generic white crisp look that I used to go for. It also looks super awesome on mobile which is mega important these days!

I'd love to hear what you think! :D
