Banzai Cliff is a location that marks one of the many terrible events surrounding the conflict that happened on Saipan. It is one of the sites where hundreds of civilians and Japanese military jumped to their deaths during the US invasion of World War II. Koreans, Chamorros, Japanese, and other Pacific Island and Asian civilians living on the island were told that the invading Americans would kill everyone in the most painful ways possible. To avoid the invading troops most of Saipan's population escaped into the jungle and headed to the north end of the island where whole families leaped from high cliffs and into the churning ocean to avoid capture.

Monuments to the dead now line the cliff-top. We made a very somber trip here to give a moment of silence to all those who were lost.

To the North of Saipan is a half cave, half bunker that was the last stronghold of the Japanese military force that occupied Saipan before the US Military took full control of the island.

To this day, the Last Command Post is marked by original cannons and other weaponry that were present during the final major battle in the struggle for control of Saipan. The site also contains various memorials to the various groups that fought and gave their lives over 65 years ago. It serves as a solemn reminder of the cost of war, and of those who paid the ultimate price for their country.

Did you know that Saipan played an integral part in World War II?

The island was an important strategic point between Japan and the United States and the Battle of Saipan in 1944 was the most decisive battle in the Pacific Theater of World War II.

American Memorial Park was created as a living memorial honoring the sacrifices made during the Marianas Campaign of World War II. Recreational facilities, a World War II museum, and flag monument keep alive the memory of the American and Marianas people who gave their lives. Over 5,000 names are inscribed on a memorial which was dedicated during the 50th anniversary of the Invasion of Saipan.
