Very interesting simple experiment with unexpected results showing differences in the "What's Hot" content feeds per gender.

G+ What's Hot Serves Based On Gender

I heard a rumour this morning that if your profile is set to male, you'll get different What's Hot (Explore) content than if you're set to female.

So I opened a tab with my profile which was set to female, and from that opened a fresh tab with WH.  Then I immediately changed my profile to male and opened another WH tab to compare as closely in time as possible the difference.

Holy. Fucking. Shit.

When I'm a girl, I get piles of those graphical platitudes I hate.  I have understood all along why +EcoSnark gets those more than my real profile, because she shares them to her NerdSmacked community to make fun of them (see https://plus.google.com/communities/117382348426379346016 ).  I don't plus them or share them, but they're always there.  I loathe them and it's why I have had the slider for WH turned down to zero for ages.

Well boy howdy wouldn'tcha just know it, when I become a guy, ALL of those things are gone and instead I get way more nerdy and technical stuff.

I noted the URLs of the top listed 12 posts from my female and male WH versions, and vaguely categorized them by type.   The difference is astounding.

Arrows indicate significant differences.  As a girl, I get stupid warm-fuzzy meaningless shit.  As a guy, I get nerdy stuff.

THIS IS NOT OKAY

I get that WH algorithms are based on what people click, like, share, comment on, etc.  Fine.  But I challenge anyone to give me one good reason why there should be such a drastic difference in less than ten seconds by simply changing my gender, other than institutionalized sexism about what girls and guys apparently like.

Screw this, I'm staying as male for now.  I want in on the nerd privilege, thanks, and out of the graphical platitude hellscape.

PS I am very tired today so if I've made an error in counting, please let me know and I'll correct it.  Also: I didn't calculate percentages because I'm not a stats expert and I knew I was likely to do that wrong one way or another, so if someone with stats expertise wants to crunch those numbers, feel free.

How to close online accounts

I thought this may be a helpful resource for many folks! A lot of people are getting worried about future privacy problems with FB Graph Search, which I assure you there will be many, one way to solve it is to delete your account and start a new one. You'd just have to refriend everyone again.

Any questions or thoughts, throw'm down there :)

What has everyone been working on lately?

I've been working on a shawl that's taking longer than expected since I am doing my tension so tightly.

Wednesday Humor

This was sent to me earlier today. It made me laugh (out loud) at how I have seen this to be, oh so very, true. I just had to share it!

A man in a hot air balloon realized he was lost. He reduced altitude and spotted a woman below. He descended a bit more and shouted, "Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don't know where I am."

The woman below replied, "You're in a hot air balloon hovering approximately 30 feet above the ground. You're between 40 and 41 degrees north latitude and between 59 and 60 degrees west longitude."

"You must be an engineer," said the balloonist. "I am," replied the woman, "How did you know?"

"Well," answered the balloonist, "everything you told me is, technically correct, but I've no idea what to make of your information, and the fact is I'm still lost. Frankly, you've not been much help at all. If anything, you've delayed my trip."

The woman below responded, "You must be in Management." "I am," replied the balloonist, "but how did you know?"

"Well," said the woman, "you don't know where you are or where you're going. You have risen to where you are due to a large quantity of hot air. You made a promise which you've no idea how to keep, and you expect people beneath you to solve your problems. The fact is you are in exactly the same position you were in before we met, but now, somehow, it's my fault."

WOW. These are a lot of changes all at once. I feel like I need to re-learn how to use Google+ . This could prove interesting.

How big of a change to a pattern (size, look, and yarn yard amount) will there be if I substitute a worsted weight in place of a DK or Fingering weight?   This is for shawls.

My thought is that would be a fairly large difference depending on the hook you use. If you use a worsted weight yarn and use a larger hook for it, the look of the pattern might be the same, but the overall size will be bigger. If you use a heavier yarn, but a smaller hook, the overall size might not be too much bigger, but it would change the look of the pattern. I hope this makes sense. I realized all this when trying to make a shirt and doing about 4 gauge samples before getting it right with the yarn, hook, and style. If I switched from a weight 2, for example, to a 4, it might be the difference between a small shirt and a medium. For a shawl, though when you're not trying to get an exact fit, it might not be a huge deal if it's a bit bigger.

This would be a great idea for someone like me. I know, I know, "Never judge a book by it's cover", but 8:10 times my judgements are right.
