Great thoughts here. Read and digest. And discuss.
An article by Elizabeth Green (CEO of a nonprofit education news organization called Chalkbeat) that recently appeared in the New York Times magazine, attempts to explain why most Americans are bad at math. In so doing, Green puts the final nail in the coffin for establishing that Common Core ...

Learning so much at NCSM 2014 in New Orleans. Great session on leveraging polarity in schools this morning. Thanks Pearson for the great caricature!

"even America's top 10 percent of students by wealth generally didn't outperform wealthy peers in other countries. According to OECD, socioeconomic status played less of a role in determining competence in problem-solving skills than math chops."
American students are barely above the average of 44 countries and economies in problem-solving skills, far behind teens in Asia, according to the first international test of that attribute in 15-year-olds. U.S. teens on average earned a score of ...

Go ahead, give it your all...
TheMathMom presents puzzles for every age and taste. Share them with your family at the dinner table, solve them with your co-workers during a coffee break, use them to spark a conversation during car ride. Puzzles are math presented as a candy. Solve 5 puzzles to get a prize. Solve 10 and we will turn you into a puzzle.

That's a good one. Took me a bit over 20 seconds to summon my inner child. But for a first grader the (unique) correct answer should be rather obvious.

These inane worksheets circulating the internet drive me crazy!
States, districts, and schools are actually in charge.

I was told that I'd be picked up between 3:55 - 4:10 pm. At 3:30, the shuttle driver started calling me and texting me. I had my phone on silent as I was presenting to a room of people. When I finally finished & looked at my phone at 3:40, I learned he was already outside and about to leave! Two other passengers in the vehicle were livid as they had been picked up around 2:15 and had been sitting there. Lucky for them, Southwest afternoon often run late, or they may have missed their flights. Now this was a contract driver for SuperShuttle, and he hustled as fast as he could. It wasn't his fault. It sound like scheduling problem. He also remarked that he wouldn't take any more SuperShuttle contracts as their scheduling causes this to happen quite a bit.

While visiting the memorial is powerful, the rigamarole getting there is daunting. Lines everywhere, crabby security guards, walk, walk walk. And after an hour in line (with tickets!) no bathrroms. Yet. Can't wait for the Museum building to open. Look for an off-time to visit. You will be overwhelmend by the memorial but underwhelmed by the lines.

Well, you aren't there for the service anyway. This megastore has all you need for a chinese dinner at home, and then some. From cheap cheap cheap, to some pricey, but lovely gongs, this place has it all. I love to pick up some chinese erasers for nephews & nieces whenever I visit. Who doesn't love sushi erasers?

As a math teacher, I had to check this out. My 18 yr old son had a wonderful time and was so excited to show how he had learned to solve rubik's cube using the building tools. The price is steep for an hour visit, but I expect great things in their future!

Excellent little theater. I can't believe how intimate it was. Book of Mormon was stunning on the stage (so much smaller than in Denver!). he guys working the lottery and standing ticket line are great. Be nice, they have a tough job. This is a hard-to get ticket right now.

What?? No bibimbab? That's right, this place is "fusion" Known for their chicken wings, I have to say, everything we tried was fabulous. The wait staff was so awesome, helping us out with a scoutmob deal we found when we just checked in to foursquare. Great Lychee Martini!

Hit this spot as 17 yr old son thought it would be cool to be in Justin Timberlake's restaurant. Even though it was 4:30 and practically empty, the server didn't want us to sit near the window unless we ordered food. So we did. The bbq pizza was good enough for my son and the nachos with mac and cheese sauce was good.
