An update on the "don't Yelp doctors" #sh^tstorm  this week, including a live conversation (via HOA) next Wednesday. Join the party!
I'm willing to talk to anyone to move the needle on health care system transformation, so I called the number on the guy's bio. He answered.

Imma just drop this here. Time to stop thinking of patients as children who need "help" figuring out healthcare. #epatient

Add to those in line for a babelfish in healthcare and the business thereof: PATIENTS.

As the democratization of knowledge drives change and new business models in every other global industry, medicine clings to its Latin phrases, and over the last 50 years has laid a thick layer of MBA-speak on top of that Latin. Costs spiral up, the pace of scientific discovery gets bogged down in bureaucracy, further raising costs, and the beat goes on.
Many years ago, I went to business school to learn the language of business.  I did learn that language and can talk about EBITDA as well as the next guy.  I also learned a different way of thinking than the method of thinkin...

Join us for what promises to be a lively discussion about medical provider ratings that are useful to PATIENTS. #epatient   #s4pm   #medx

I am hosting a conversation with Niam Yaraghi (Center for Technology Innovation, The Brookings Institution) and Casey Quinlan (Mighty Casey Media) following their interesting back-and-forth online on the question of whether and how patient reviews of physicians can add value. We will consider the old saw that healthcare is unique and can't be dealt with in the same way as other products and services, and explore productive ways forward around recognizing the patient voice in evaluating health care providers.

Please read Niam's and Casey's posts before tuning in: Niam: http://j.mp/1G7aXCs Casey: http://j.mp/1G7aKz0 - and follow up posts from Niam: http://j.mp/1G7bUuB Casey: http://j.mp/1LhPWvj

You should follow all three of us on Twitter:@healthblawg, @niamyaraghi and @mightycasey.

See you on the 24th. Please come prepared to join the conversation by posting comments and questions on the feed. We will address them as time permits.
This Hangout On Air is hosted by David Harlow. The live video broadcast will begin soon.

Pretty basic kind of questions, and far easier than asking questions about pathology or benefits and risks.  The answer to "How much is that?" for CT scans in my case ranged--at the same place, and with the same machine, etc--ranged from $8010, to $930, depending on the insurance-negotiated discount, my share, my deductible, and a few other arcane rules.  But the $930 cost was the simple, no-insurance-pay-with-credit-card, was $930.  However, with the insurance involvement, my co-pays and the maximums imposed by my insurance, the CT provider could get up to $1600.  So would the provider encourage direct cash payments?  You know the answer to that one!

Bottom line: When you go to the doctor, any doctor, always ask for your records.

The MIghty Mouth & Chief Message Officer
Introduction
The "Mighty Mouth" of Mighty Casey Media LLC.

Chief Message Officer, brand storyteller, e-patient, comedian, writer, speaker.

Are you famous yet?

I'm a storyteller, media consultant, speaker, and writer with an extensive background in broadcasting, theater, and stand-up comedy, who believes that it - business, and life - is theater. Act accordingly

The stories I'm the best at telling are the ones that will transform healthcare, making it work better for the people within it: patients, doctors, nurses, scientists, technologists, any organization that's looking to "make it better."

And I'm a proven pro at finding the funny in brand stories - the kind of funny that gets you noticed in the right way, not by Congressional investigations ...
