Add to those in line for a babelfish in healthcare and the business thereof: PATIENTS.

As the democratization of knowledge drives change and new business models in every other global industry, medicine clings to its Latin phrases, and over the last 50 years has laid a thick layer of MBA-speak on top of that Latin. Costs spiral up, the pace of scientific discovery gets bogged down in bureaucracy, further raising costs, and the beat goes on.
Many years ago, I went to business school to learn the language of business.  I did learn that language and can talk about EBITDA as well as the next guy.  I also learned a different way of thinking than the method of thinkin...

CMS proposes gutting the criteria to demonstrate that patients are "meaningfully using" their healthcare record data. I say: CMS, if we (patients) burn, you burn with us.

CMS is proposing to gut the criteria for patient view/download/transmit access and use of their health information. I say: CMS, if we (patients) burn, you burn with us.

Latest on the MIghty Mouth blog, part of my semi-tongue-in-cheek series about the doctor/patient relationship as ... a relationship. #gmdd   #patientengagement   #pferoadmap

Bottom line: When you go to the doctor, any doctor, always ask for your records.

Embedded in this is more grist for my "end employer-sponsored insurance" rallying cry. The insurance and medical industries have made a fortune off of fee for service medicine over the last 75+ years. It's time for people/patients to be the primary customer in this most human of all businesses. The only way for that to happen is for people to be in charge of their healthcare purchasing decisions. This isn't something that can happen overnight (see my full thinking here: http://mightycasey.com/employer-plans-doa/), but the longer we fiddle around in 3rd-party-payer games, the more money/time/lives will be wasted in the chasing-revenue arms race that US healthcare has become.
I have just spent two days at the Conference Board’s 15th Annual Employee Healthcare Conference.  The speakers were the leaders in an evolving world of employee health benefits whose goal is to improve the world of healthcare...

It's like you put tasty dark chocolate in front of me!

Really like your take on this, particularly your closing comments re UX design/tech being only a small part of the issue. Tech tools can be a powerful way to give a leg up, literacy-wise, to people/patients who might not think of themselves as part of the healthcare delivery revolution.

Shifting thinking from "healthcare is something that happens over there, to sick people, but not to me" to "healthcare is something I do for myself, with the help of a great clinical team" will go hand in hand with that using-tech-to-invite-literacy idea.

+Mighty Casey Gotcha. Are you aware of the fact that there is a plan to do a documentary about the College Players? Mary Bettini Blank and Tom Blank are part of a small team who has initiated this effort. They've tried to get in touch with all the people they have contact information. Have they contacted you? If not, is this something that you would want to be a part of?

The MIghty Mouth & Chief Message Officer
Introduction
The "Mighty Mouth" of Mighty Casey Media LLC.

Chief Message Officer, brand storyteller, e-patient, comedian, writer, speaker.

Are you famous yet?

I'm a storyteller, media consultant, speaker, and writer with an extensive background in broadcasting, theater, and stand-up comedy, who believes that it - business, and life - is theater. Act accordingly

The stories I'm the best at telling are the ones that will transform healthcare, making it work better for the people within it: patients, doctors, nurses, scientists, technologists, any organization that's looking to "make it better."

And I'm a proven pro at finding the funny in brand stories - the kind of funny that gets you noticed in the right way, not by Congressional investigations ...
