Sustainable luxury tourism at an affordable price.

This old renovated farmhouse has been standing here for centuries and in the olden days it was a working farmhouse for a large mansion house which stands nearby. It is a particularly large farmhouse compared to most working farmhouses of the Minho region as the main farm stretched from Adaúfe right up to “Sete Fontes”. It is not now a working farmhouse but, as stated in the welcome page, there are plenty of fruit trees and some home grown vegetables. We aim to create a relaxed and peaceful atmosphere here in Casa do Alto, whether it be indoors or outdoors.
Grain and many other crops used to be grown and stored in the farmhouse and the ground floor apartment used to be the stables for the animals. It has been restored recently. However, the main character has been preserved and the original stone walls are still in existence. One of the interior rooms has been converted into the kitchenette/bar area and is full of souvenirs (mainly hats!) from all around the globe. The collection was mainly built up by the owners (Peggy and Mario) but many friends have also contributed to this quirky, quaint space. There are also some antique settles to sit and relax in this area and, maybe, sip a tipple of the local wines.

If you decide to rent the top floor apartment you may enjoy relaxing in the privacy of one of the suites or decide to browse through the library in the main living/dining area. A superb jacuzzi is provided in the separate bathroom on this floor. The suites both have their own international TV provided but you can also watch TV in the comfort of the living/dining room area. The top veranda is a perfect spot to watch the spectacular sunsets and enjoy the view of the surrounding property and the Cavado River Valley.

The old kitchen on the middle floor has been renovated and converted into a large living/dining area where many events have taken place. The original fireplace, complete with the old wood fired stone oven, is still in situ and is used very often for roasting kid, lamb and fish in the old fashioned way.

Outdoors, relax in the surrounding gardens either in the shade of the old trees by the stone table or around the sunny swimming pool which is near the orchard. At the entrance, there is a large pinewood area with plenty of space to set up one of our hammocks and relax between the scented trees of this area.

Casa do Alto is an old renovated stone farmhouse which is nestled in the hillside of the Cavado river valley. It has 3 independent self contained floors, two of which (the upper and the ground floor) are available for rental. Its location is near the campus of the University of Minho.

There are exquisite views from all sides of the house. A part of the old Roman road into Braga is right on the back doorstep. The stone “eira” (or patio where they used to dry cereals) is one of the largest in the Minho area (484 m2) and many memorable events have taken place within this large area.

The perfect quiet place to stay as a base to tour around this area of Portugal or just chill out and relax within the grounds of the property itself (1 hectare) either in the surrounding garden, which includes a small wooded area with oaks, cork oaks, sweet chestnuts amongst many other varieties of trees.

It also has a large, secluded private swimming pool with a magnificent view over the orchard which includes a wide variety of fruit trees such as orange, lemon, tangerine, kaki, apple, pear, fig, cherry, kiwi, grapes, apricot, peach, plum and many others. Next to the pool there is an outdoor kitchen with barbecue, changing room, bathroom and gym.

There is also a second outdoor kitchen with log oven and barbecue beside a large stone table in the shade of a large oak, in a shaded area of the grounds. As you enter the farmhouse gates there is a small pine wood with adjoining linden and walnut trees which sweeps up the driveway on the left hand side.
