Anyone have SF venue recommendations for holding a medium-sized expo and wearables hackathon? Would need two separate rooms, good wifi, and room for 300ish people. Oh, and you'd all be invited. ;)

Anyone here know any SF wearables startups that might be interested in hosting events for wearables in their space? We need more offline community-building!

This Google+ Hangout will focus on mathematics! The 1-hour Hangout be moderated by the Chegg team (Carrie, Ryan, Jessica) and will include some special guests, namely:

1. Allen Wolmer, former solutions author (he'll be back!), Education Tech Consultant, and retired educator
2. Christian Carvajal, math solutions author and professional writer
3. Jill Schmidlkofer, statistics solutions author, educator, and creator of online courses and content for several universities and programs

And tentatively (but we not-so-secretly REALLY want you to come)...
4. Cindy Dibble, math solutions author, math education graduate student at CSU-Fullerton, and former math teacher/tutor
5. Austin Taylor, math solutions author, graduate student at Emporia State University, and avid cat enthusiast!

We're excited to have them share how they've used their math expertise to explore careers inside and outside of the classroom. This will be specially tailored to help out current students, graduate students, and those looking to pivot their Chegg experience into something exciting and powerful! We will also be sharing some tips and tricks for our new math authors.

DISCUSSION TOPICS:
1. Best practices for solutions authoring in math
2. Software programs you love (or at least tolerate!)
3. Outside opportunities using the skills you learned in school or working for Chegg
4. Interesting career paths using math!
5. Your favorite math topics and why

If you'd like to be on-camera, we will need to know in the comments on this event so we can link you. We can only guarantee FOUR slots for people, so it's on a first come-first serve basis! Otherwise, you can watch us live or on YouTube after the event.

The event will happen on August 9 at 11 AM (Pacific time! Make sure to tune in in your time zone!).

Can't wait to see you then!

This was so fun, everyone! I'm sorry a few of you were knocked off-- it seems we were at capacity. For anyone who missed it, it's permanently on the Internet here and at Chegg Textbook Solutions Authors Meet & Greet.

AGENDA

The team will start out with a 10-15 minute introduction on ourselves and some updates:
1. New Authoring Guidelines
2. New books arriving soon
3. Chegg's new and improved Q&A boards
4. Referral contest

Then we'll open it up:

1. General introductions: What subject(s) do you author in, where are you from, what else do you do?
2. What do friends and family think of your work with Chegg?
3. What is the best way to stay motivated while authoring? Music? Background noise? Setting?
4. What has been your textbook/solution from hell? What did you learn from solving it?
5. What do you hope to do with your Chegg experience in the future? Do you see this as being something you can leverage? If not, how can we help you? Even if you do, how can we connect the dots for you and make you more successful?

Number 5 is the most important to me, so I want to make sure we have plenty of time to discuss it. What you do for students is incredibly important, but if you want to do more (within or outside of Chegg), we want to give you that opportunity!

Our FIRST LIVE Google Hangout will be at 2pm PDT CA-USA (find your local time here http://ht.ly/jjG3U) on Friday, June 21!

You liked the old look? I thought it was hard to navigate and curate the content you actually wanted to see. What don't you like about this new one?

Tools of the Trade  -

Hey fellow community managers! I found a pretty solid template for a content calendar from Likeable media using Google docs, but I was wondering if anyone had other software recs, best practices, or suggestions for good reads that they could share on creating a content calendar. I'm revamping ours, and I would like something more robust than Google docs, that would have reminders and the ability to assign tasks, perhaps even the ability to author right there in the calendar. Any ideas?
4 tips to help you plan: Establish boundaries Pay attention to upcoming events Create evergreen content Make Google Docs Spreadsheets your best friend

After discussing the issue at  #sfcmgrUN , I started thinking a lot about how community managers can help break down silos in organizations, so I wrote a bit about it. Do any of you guys have similar struggles or (better yet!) tips on best practices for sharing community feedback? Do you send out a report? Do you have weekly meetings with different groups? How do you get the most buy-in for your community management efforts?
At last month's SF community manager UNconference, we finished off the day with guided discussions based on attendees' questions. I had a question that had been burning in my mind for quite some ti...

Music streaming that actually helps you focus and work better, with a scientific advisory board behind it: "Each piece of music phase sequenced by focus@will has a specific role in influencing how your brain habituates, enhancing your focus and reading enjoyment. Characteristics such as musical key, intensity, arrangement, speed, emotional values, recording style, and much more determine what is played where and when."
Focus@will is a neuroscience based web tool that uses phase sequenced instrumental music to help reduce distraction and increase attention span up to 400% when working, studying, writing or reading. It delivers productivity on demand to anyone working on a deadline such as journalists, lawyers, coders, designers, students, creative writers etc.
