Agreed! The notification handling is the one thing that I miss in my move from iPhone to android. With my iPhone, I could see all my notifications from the time I last locked it, and most of the time I didn't even feel the need to open my phone. Now I have to open my phone all the time because I can't see it all in a glance. This guy also suggests actionable notifications, which would be even more awesome.

Great article by Andrew Seeley at the Institute for Catholic Liberal Education dissecting the Common Core, particularly its age-inappropriateness.

I am the manager of a page for a client, and we have been offered a custom URL, but it is not what we want (it is offering +SophiainstituteforteachersOrg rather than +SophiaInstituteforTeachers). I don't see any way to request something different. Who do I contact to request something different than what the system is offering?

Cardinal Newman Society is reporting that two more dioceses have rejected Common Core: Gaylord, MI and Madison/LaCrosse, WI. Articles below both contain links to statements from the dioceses, and the statement from the Bishop of Madison is particularly worth reading.

About Common Core  -

FANTASTIC article from Prof. Anthony Esolen about how the Common Core's writing standards are substandard. Excerpt:

"For the mechanics, the crucial thing is that the author presents 'evidence' for his claims, and not whether the evidence is really evidence, or whether the pieces of evidence are consistent with one another, or whether the author draws just conclusions from the evidence.  They apply the rubric of their very badly written checklist: the author 'develops the topic thoroughly by selecting the most significant and relevant facts, extended definitions, concrete details, quotations, or other information and examples appropriate to the audience’s knowledge of the topic.'"

Just added to the CCE blog: For parents whose schools have decided to adapt (or adopt) CCSS, here are some suggestions for what minimal adaptions should be made.

The great minds have long attempted to identify these cardinal virtues—these virtues that are central to all the rest http://ow.ly/rD3oD

About Common Core  -

Great article today on the Catholic Thing. Excerpt:

"After centuries of success with a proven Catholic pedagogy, Catholic education has suddenly and inexplicably yielded to the latest encroaching and ephemeral fad. This year over 100 dioceses hastily adopted the Common Core State Standards Initiative that seeks to direct education for children across the country. Despite the promise that the standards “do not dictate how teachers should teach,” Catholic school teachers in Common Core schools are forced to teach in an entirely new manner according to “the standards” – and not according to Catholic pedagogy."

Dr. Peg Luksik, author for +Crisis Magazine, speaks at a Stop Common Core rally in North Carolina. She outlines the problems with Common Core, specifically about the "common" part of it and the problem with resource allocation.

The diocese of Bridgeport has decided to adopt the common core state standards. All the education professionals I talk to declare that "standards do not dictate curriculum." True, but they are highly influential. The goals you set for each educational discipline have a profound effect on the steps and methods sensible to progressing along those steps. As soon as they try to push common standards in history it will  be truly problematic. The worldview presented to the next generation will be determined by only one side of the political polarity; you can guess which. Catholic independent schools not only have the right, but the obligation to conform both their standards and curriculum to a higher standard; Truth, Beauty and Goodness in all His forms.

My children have been at Country Village Montessori for several years, from preschool and now into elementary. We have been so happy with the quality of education, the care in the prepared Montessori environment, and the atmosphere of respect that the teachers work so hard to maintain among themselves and the children. Our kids, particularly in the elementary class, have been challenged to rise to far higher levels than they would have achieved elsewhere. The focus on inculcating good habits of mind, great literature, advanced math skills, natural science, world history, and more has kept us coming back each year.
