The Way Of All Flesh by Ambrose Parry | This was an extraordinary book that I deeply enjoyed, the mystery was what kept me reading while the background in medicine it's the true jewel of the book. The book starts with a dead prostitute and with the statement: “No decent story ought to begin with the death of a prostitute”, nonetheless the book proves itself wrong, there is much more than a decent story in its pages.
The book walked us through the use of ether as an anesthetic and the posterior find of chloroform as a better option. How religious groups opposed to the use of anesthetics while giving birth for being anti natural, pain was desirable. Abortions with terrible consequences and we follow the lives of these doctors that trained as men midwives. I was shock to learn how in some cases, the baby's head had to be broken during birth to permit extraction in order to save the mother.
The main characters Will and Sarah are fantastic. Will has a dark past but he wants to better himself to find redemption, while Sarah is a housemaid with bigger ambitions. She tells to Dr Simpson that she does not want to be the best-read housemaid of the City and I loved her for that, and Simpson for replying, “It may not always be thus,’ he said softly. ‘And if things are ever to be different, it will take women like you to change them.” The whole Simpson’s household is full of wonderful characters that I’m sure will have their share of protagonism in the books to come.
This book was written under the pseudonymous Ambrose Parry by husband-wife Chris Brookmyre and Marisa Haetzman and honors Edinburgh as a leading city in the field of medicine.
I received an advance copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Many Thanks Canongate Books, Ambrose Parry and Netgalley for the opportunity.

The 7 ½ Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton
This is one of those books that keeps growing and getting better as you read, some people mistakenly compared the storyline with Groundhog Day, yes the day repeats itself for Aiden Bishop but is the only similarity you’ll find.

Every day that repeats has a new perspective of the story, a new discovery. It's wonderful to see how the same scene can be experienced and viewed differently depending on where you where and what you stand for, and that’s how life works! Not two people live the same experience, even if both are present at the same time and moment. Every host is different, different lives, professions, bodies, intelligence and vices. Therefore, Aiden has to fight harder to not let himself lose on his host. He has one goal and that is to solve the murder of Evelyn Hardcastle and left Blackheath.

In this book you’ll find redemption and new beginnings, loyalty and betrayal. At the end the book surprises us with a more futuristic twist and I wonder if that’s where we are going? I wholeheartedly believe someone can change but only if his nature is not corrupted. Anyone can make a terrible mistake and repent, but only if the person understand that there is another option, a less evil option a different choice to be made. Unfortunately there are individuals whose nature is corrupted beyond redemption and this book brilliantly pose that question.

If you love a good mystery that is unpredictable and keeps you reading and wondering until the very end, don’t hesitate to read this book.

I received an advance copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Many Thanks to Sourcebooks Landmark, Stuart Turton and Netgalley for the opportunity.

Being the 7th book in the saga I was worried it will not be as good as the previously ones, I was sorely mistaken, in my opinion is better, Mr Pötzsch never fails to deliver a solid mystery.

This is the story of a serial killer that has been killing for at least 20 years without anyone noticing, no one even bothered to make the connection between the brutal killings until Jakob Kuisl and his family arrived to Munich for the Council of Twelve; his curious mind found these similarities and the story begins. The story revolves around killings, the forged of coins and a prostitution network. I never see the ending coming, the killer was concealed until the very end.

This book opens the door to many possibilities for the saga to be kept alive, a new generation will take over, I’m sure. In fact, more than a half of the members of the Kuisl clan are moving to Munich. I like Peter and Max duet as well as Paul, Peter and the street urchins gang in action.

“During this hour, just before the floodgates opened, the silence was the most profound — and the despair the greatest. It was the best time to hunt”.

Many Thanks to AmazonCrossing, Oliver Pötzsch and Netgalley for the ARC.

¿Qué está pasando? | Aprendamos a discernir entre la verdad, una opinión y una manipulación, pero, sobre todo, no nos prestemos a ese juego burdo de quienes manipulan la opinión para conseguir sus propios fines.
