When it comes to corporate culture, the influence and mindset of its founders play a huge part in shaping a cohesive team. Co-Founder and CFO, John Hyshka was the second person I met from Phenomenome. +Alix Hayden was the first. The balance of professionalism, respect, and banter between these two made me want to be a part of their team.

When you've been on your own freelancing as a consultant, it's hard to imagine going back to an office (Mon - Fri, 9 - 5).

Last week I sat down with John and had "the talk". My consulting contract was about to expire and as discussed in the beginning, they would want me on board as a full time employee.

The one great thing about the business rapport that John and I have is the ability to say what's on our minds. Establishing a level of openness, honesty and respect from the get-go goes a long way when it comes to negotiating terms.

John told me that he was concerned that I might find it difficult to accept his full time offer because I was a "coffee shop girl". I told him that I did. I told John that I didn't know if I'd like being in the office Mon - Fri, 9 - 5. I said I needed more time to think about it. I also told him that I really needed the time to come up with an intelligent and creative counter offer. His response was "Oh, I know you will."

Two days ago we got together to discuss my counter offer. One of the first things John said was "I should've brought a red pen." Whatever ....

We walked to the coffee shop that resides in the research park and caught up with things other than work.

I won't get into the details but the creative counter offer was accepted.
(Perhaps I'll chronicle the conversation later in another post.)

Both parties were willing to compromise to meet the needs and resources of the other.

Thanks John. Can I get that really big whiteboard now?
We are a medical research company that is run and managed by some of the most caring, passionate and down to earth people. We owe it to the leadership of our founders, Dayan Goodenowe and John Hyshka (who are often referred to as "Science Guy" and "Business Guy"). We will soon be profiling the people that make up Team Phenomenome.

Here's a preview of John Hyshka, Business Guy a.k.a. CFO and Co-Founder.

We should all be so lucky to be able to ask this question.

Changing passwords is a pain in the behind. But everyone should be doing this because of the Heartbleed security problems that have come to surface the last few days: http://www.techmeme.com/140410/p3#a140410p3

Some things:

1. If you don't have a different password for each site you are doing it wrong! (Particularly for banks, email, and major social networks).
2. If your password isn't at least 12 characters long, you are doing it wrong!
3. If your passwords have ANY dictionary names in them, you are doing it wrong (things that appear in the dictionary).
4. If you aren't using two-factor authentication on EVERY site that offers such (Gmail, Facebook, Twitter all do) then you are doing it wrong.
5. If you aren't using a password manager like Lastpass then you are probably doing it wrong (I let it generate all my passwords now to make sure I get truly strong 20-character passwords).

Good luck out there!

I know for one, returning back to Canada that there are issues in the "well perceived" Canadian Health Care System that needs to be addressed. It most certainly is NOT greener north of the 49th parallel (sorry, eh).

Regarding this article, it's very frustrating to know that someone who is faced with the knowledge of having a brain tumour, has to spear head her "healthy treatment plan".
