Brad Crawford just called.  Is that our financial guy?  I didn't answer because I didn't recognize the number.

The year in smart phones, circa 2008.  Amazing how far they have evolved in 7 years, isn't it?

My Favorite Song For Five Minutes One Time: Fall 1988 - It's late, it's raining, and I'm leaving (name omitted)'s house. I'm sure we've just had a fight. We're 16. A few months before I'd sat in her living room and we'd filled out the Columbia House form for a bunch of "free" cassettes. "Tango In The Night" by Fleetwood Mac was sent by mistake (along with "American Beauty" by the Grateful Dead which to this day is still my favorite Dead album, but I digress...) I pop the tape into the deck and this song comes on and for five minutes it is my favorite song. I've probably heard it less than 5 times since and I can't tell you why at that particular moment it worked for me. I'm sure that immediately afterwards I popped this cassette out and popped in Anthrax or the Ramones or T.S.O.L. and screamed along at the top of my lungs. #todayyoushouldbelisteningto   #tangointhenight   #fleetwoodmac

What a great idea.

Charity arcade at Arlanda Airport. This is an astonishingly great idea. Any coin, from any nation, gives you a go at Ms Pacman, and any donated cash goes to charity. What an amazing method for collecting donations.

Today You Should Be Listening To: What We Had by Wednesday Week.  Wednesday Week are best known for a couple of things that are only tangentially related to their music.  Fronted by sisters Kristi and Kelly Callan and including future Dream Syndicate -- a future Today You Should Be Listening To feature -- front man Steve Wynn, Wednesday Week orbited the periphery of the Los Angeles paisley underground movement of the mid 80s which included such luminaries as the Rain Parade and the Leaving Trains. Wednesday Week's greatest claim to fame however may be their contribution to the soundtrack of the decidedly "B" level horror classic, Slumber Party Massacre II where they provided the backing tracks for a teenage girl band practicing for a "Battle of the Bands" competition.  It's disappointing that they never made more than one album.  "What We Had" was really good.  The comparisons to the Go-Gos or the Bangles will be inevitable but honestly, it's a favorable comparison - a little smoother than "Beauty and the Beat" and a little more ragged than "A Different Light".  A better comparison would probably be the Tonya Donnelly side of early Throwing Muses.  Regardless, it's a good record.  Check it out.

Today You Should Be Listening To: The Colour and the Shape by Foo Fighters. Containing what would definitely be in the running for best song of the 90s, "Everlong," The Colour and the Shape finally sounds like an album made by a band. The first Foo Fighters album was Dave Grohl trying to figure out what kind of band he wanted to be in post Nirvana. It's a good record but it's not a great record. The Colour and the Shape is a great record. It's a thrilling album containing some of Dave and Co.'s best work, from the bloated stops of Monkey Wrench to the afore mentioned Everlong. Even the filler is good. Maybe the last "great" record of the 90s.
