Your New Hero

This video from 2010 has been blowing up over the last day and for good reason: this woman will be your new hero.

When my son and I first went to Clarke, we were very impressed how personable everyone seemed. That was just the impression for his overnight campus visit with the cross country team. That impression didn't change when we returned for registration. However once enrolled, things got a little rocky. While this is an excellent university, they seem to thrive on the need for money; at the expense of the student and family. There are hidden costs for everything, books are severely over priced, campus jobs barely pay minimum wage. The clerk in the FA office is often quite rude and the other staff don't really appear to help the students "find" more money. They spend more time telling students to tell their parents to try to take out personal loans. More than a few students transferred from the university during Christmas break 2011 due to expenses. While many schools offer a plethora of scholarship programs through their respective campuses, Clarke is very limited with any financial offers. Their brochures boast a high number of students receiving financial aid, but they neglect to tell you how many transfer because they can't get enough financial aid to cover costs. A lot of schools that offer athletic and academic awards try to make sure their students are retained and succeed, Clarke focuses on the success of students that decide to stick it out rather than working on retention. Upon registration, there is a technology fee that must be paid. This costs includes the use of a wireless connection throughout the campus. You get the constant connections issues tossed in for free. There is also another fee parents aren't told of up front; on top of books being outrageously priced, students have to pay a steep price for an extra computer program for their classes. This program is not an opt out program, it is needed for the classes and it's quite pricey for students. Instead of using this program for both semesters, students are required to purchase a new program per semester. As a parent, you're told of all the resources available to your student; the parent later finds out how limited these resources are. Athletes often times miss dinner because the main dining hall closes before they get out of practice, forcing them to get what they can from the smaller cafe. As an educational institution, the value is incomparable, overall "customer service" value needs a lot of work. The school shouldn't come off as "we welcome you and your are now family" while in the process of getting your child, then financially gouging you once the whole enrollment process is completed and you sign on the dotted line. My son is a sophomore now, he's bought into their system. I'm not ready to go that far unless I see more of an effort to help students stay in school. One final thing to think about...the day you sign on the dotted line, you are told "you're ours now" believe it. You get the first bill about two weeks later.
