Here's a story I wrote for tomorrow's New York Times about viruses evolving new traits in a couple weeks. It's really remarkable how scientists can zoom in on evolution at a molecular scale and see it play out mutation by mutation. It's also a little scary, when you think about how this process can produce new diseases.
Researchers report that viruses deprived of their usual channel for infiltrating the E. coli bacterium evolved a different route into the cells in little more than two weeks.

You might consider writing about the notion that rather than being highly improbable those multiple mutations are a certainty. The article said that the probability of the required 5 mutations was one in a thousand trillion trillion so they couldn't happen in a matter of hours. Professor Markus Arndt,, recently demonstrated quantum interference effects in a 430 atom molecule. If we assume that within the genome quantum probabilities are at work those multiple mutations must appear. It also explains how the complexity of life itself can occur in finite time.
