Steven Benner is a spookily brilliant scientist with a wide-ranging mind. He works on the origin of life, disease diagnostic tests, and how to find alternate forms of life on other planets.

At this year's Joint Genome Institute meeting, he gave the closing keynote. I had kicked off the conference with a talk of my own (about how pop-culture genomania is wearing me out), but unfortunately I had to leave the day before Benner spoke. So now I'm watching it online--he calls it a response to me. I highly recommend it!

DOE these are the folks that were put in charge of the U.S. nuclear arsenal, and now they're running the "DOE Join Genome Institute" ... I feel I need to go review what it is that the Department of Energy is all about...
