Xerostomia (Dry Mouth) Is “A Common Side Effect” Of Many Prescription Medications

Prevention Magazine reported that a study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society suggests some medications may affect oral health since “a common side effect of certain prescribed medications is dry mouth.” The article explained that when people experience dry mouth, bacteria cannot be removed from the mouth as effectively, which increases the “risk for tooth decay and oral infections.” According to the article, “Medications linked to dry mouth include those used to treat urinary incontinence, depression, insomnia, anxiety, and high blood pressure.”
