Drink Orange Juice Everyday? Beware!

A recent study by Dr. Yanfeng Ren, associate professor at the University of Rochester Eastman Institute for Oral Health, “found that orange juice reduced tooth-enamel hardness by 84 percent after people drank it every day for five days.” Dr. Ren said milk is a better choice than juice, pointing out that the calcium in it is good for teeth. For those who drink juice, Dr. Ren encourages drinking it quickly so it has less time in contact with teeth, rinsing the mouth out with water afterward, and waiting at least 30 minutes before brushing teeth.

The Huffington Post (10/31) carries an article first published on Clean Plates that includes crunchy produce, watermelon, and dairy products on a list of good foods for oral health. Even when consuming these items, the article notes the importance of brushing teeth and cleaning between them regularly.
