With a beautiful location and layout, the Calico Cupboard was very busy as usual when we visited mid-morning on a Saturday. Though we were seated quickly and the service was initially great, the food left something to be desired. My wife ordered the Calico Benedict, which was served up on a thick, fatty piece of ham and what ended up to be a very-saturated/soggy croissant. We asked a busy, passing waitress for a larger knife to cut it up with and, though we were assured one would be right out, never received it. The quiche I ordered, on the other hand, was pretty good, though the potatoes accompanying both of our meals were pretty bland. Overall, a very pretty restaurant with what ended up being so-so food.

We thought we would avoid the rush and go for lunch at 2:00 on a Thursday. Boy, were we wrong! The place was packed and the staff was frazzled. The food was good, but 3 of our 4 orders needed corrections (brought someone else's order, forgot the salad dressing, missing sides). This was after a long wait for a table. If you go, make sure you *sign yourself in* on the tablet provided, because they don't do it for you. Oh, and they only have two toilets per gender, 2 upstairs and 2 down, so you might need to wait a bit.

Be still my gluten free heart & eat well. I work in Mt Vernon once a month and come early just for breakfast. It makes my hour drive worth it. The gluten free options are what I always wanted in a good breakfast place but never found until now. I love the cozy atmosphere, it reminds me of my grandma's house on Sunday mornings. I look forward to this place each month.
