VIEW THE COMPLETE SPIKING PROCESS (WITH STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS)

What is spiking? If a sample does not ignite easily or not at all in a calorimeter, then the spiking method of ignition can be used to promote complete combustion of the sample. Only once the sample is completely burned can an accurate determination of the sample be ascertained. A combustion aid is added to the sample, like a Benzoic Acid Tablet, which will easily ignite, and in turn ignite the non-combustible sample.

REAL WORLD CALORIMETRY: DISPOSING OF HAZARDOUS WASTE

The environmental impact of incineration of high to medium calorific waste in a specialized waste incinerator (usually as rotary kiln) can be tested with the aid of an oxygen bomb calorimeter.

Read our blog to find out more about the vital role bomb calorimeters play in the management and disposal of hazardous waste:

HOW TO PERFORM SPIKING USING DDS GELATINE CAPSULES

Before proceeding with the spiking method, make sure you’ve determined the spike value when using the DDS Gelatine Capsules.

The spike value is obtained by running 2-3 gelatine capsule samples and calculating the average energy value. This value is the spike value.

CALIBRATING THE CAL3K BAYONET OXYGEN BOMB VESSEL

Each vessel needs to be calibrated. Although the vessels are CNC machined and very similar they are not exactly the same in electrical and thermal behaviour. Therefore each vessel must be calibrated in the CAL3K it is used in. There are a maximum of four CAL3K's per laboratory system (room). Each vessel holds four calibration fields, one for each CAL3K chassis. The fields are chosen automatically by the chassis number.
