Similar to the semantic web, techniques have been created for GIS, where finding and applying geospatial data requires protocols and standards that allow the large variety of data to be more easily searched.

Traditional GIS packages have been limited by the fact their spatial statistics and analytical capabilities were relatively minor, including a small range of built-in functions, forcing users to use alternative platforms for advanced analysis and modeling and simulation. With the utility of R, many popular statistical procedures and more advanced analyses, including a variety of simulation applications, can be applied directly within tools such as QGIS.

Introduction
What I Do
I have been in the geographic information systems (GIS) field for over 15 years.  In 2001, I established GIS Lounge which covers all things relating to GIS, cartography, and maps.

I am also the editor for Geo Lounge which covers all things geography.

I love to find interesting stories about how geography and GIS are being used.
