Dr. Mountrakis & Sheng Yang, a graduate student, are measuring deforestation in a different way. Rather than measuring the total amount of forest cover lost, they are using satellite maps to calculate the average distance to the nearest forest. They found that in the continental United States between 1992 & 2001 the distance to the nearest forest increased by 1/3 of a mile.

“A decolonized anthropology, from my perspective, is one that joins the work of social struggle directly to the work of social analysis. It takes the tools and perspectives of anthropology and uses them not to produce elite theory for a narrow readership, but uses the insights it generates to contribute to radical projects of social restructuring.” – Daniel Goldstein

The traditional leaders of three San groups in southern Africa have released an ethical code of conduct for researchers who wish to study the groups’ culture and biology.

The code of conduct was issued in early March from the !Xun, Khwe and !Khomani group leaders and encourage scientists to submit research proposals to be reviewed by a panel of community members.

One individual in particular was concerned with the fact that researchers come out of these studies enriched in San culture and knowledge, but San communities do not receive any benefits for allowing researchers to study them.
