Scott Fahlman is a Research Professor in Carnegie Mellon’s School of Computer Science who is primarily interested in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its applications. He has worked in many areas of AI: planning, knowledge representation, image processing, natural language, document classification and processing, artificial neural networks, and the use of massively parallel machines to solve AI problems.

But, more importantly, he invented the emoticon!

> This is a fantastic comment!! Thank you!!

I was half-expecting someone to criticize me for reducing mathematicians to carbon-based information processing devices; thank you for your commendation.

My professors in the Department of Computer Science at my alma mater were essentially chiefly mad-scientist-type researchers who hated teaching and were only interested in research.  I had an antipathy toward most of them when in college; one of them once told me, "I don't think you're cut-out for computer science."  Since then, a major goal of mine has been to disprove that opinion.

To this end, you'll need to excuse me for behaving as a mad-scientist myself; I'm fairly certain that at least some of my professors would have said something similar about mathematicians, since they were only interested in ideas, but not people.

One of my dreams is to show that I'm the one who more cut-out for computer science.  (This is quite difficult, since I am actually a haiku poet at heart who just happened to major in computer science.)  Therefore, I need to become the madder mad-scientist.
