Brief thoughts on #christianliving
I think it stands to reason that if we're not desperate for God we fail to truly see ourselves and how wicked we are. Jonathan Edwards pointed out, “The greater the creature's dependence is on God's perfections, the greater concern he has with them, so much the greater occasion has he to take ...

I just submitted the following note to the President of the United States ('s Web site), so if I suddenly and inexplicably disappear, this is why: "I am writing to urge the president to cease and desist all negotiations with Iran, the foremost sponsor of global terror. They are committed to the total annihilation of Israel, one of our closest allies, as well as America itself, and they say as much both openly and often. The president, in his stubborn insistence against all reason to negotiate with the enemy, is acting against the will of the people he ostensibly governs. His actions are selfish, childish, cowardly, and dangerous. If he continues down this path he will prove himself the enemy of We the People that most Americans suspect he already is. Do not continue to cave in to Iran. The Obama administration should never have even deigned to begin talks with terror sponsors in the first place."

Bonhoeffer on his trip to Barcelona: "Every day I am getting to know people, at any rate their circumstances, and sometimes one is able to see through their circumstances into themselves--and at the same time one thing continues to impress me: here I meet people as they are, far from the masquerade of "the Christian world", people with passions, criminal types, small people with small aims, small wages and small sins--all in all they are people who feel homeless in both senses, and begin to thaw when one speaks to them with kindess--real people. I can only say that I have gained the impression that it is just these people who are much more under grace than under wrath, and that it is the Christian world that is much more under wrath than under grace."

Why I'm leaving my church: #christianliving   #reform
Dietrich Bonhoeffer was asking the very same foundational question in early adulthood. In fact his doctoral dissertation, at age 21, was written to address it. It's one I have been asking more and more in recent years as I've become increasingly dissatisfied with what I've experienced as a ...

"Sin is the only qualification for a man to come to Jesus… the more sin I have the more cause I have to hope for mercy… the more vile a man is, the more eagerly I invite him to believe in Jesus.” -- Spurgeon

In God Glorified in Man’s Presence (Edwards, Jonathan Edwards on Knowing Christ, p.45), he says this: “…if we allow the Scriptures to be a revelation of God’s mind… God should appear full, and man himself empty…God should appear all, and man nothing.”

Did Jesus command us to hate? #christianliving   #hate
Hate: v.t. to feel extreme enmity toward; to have a strong aversion to. I don't expect to hear a sermon on Luke 14.25-33 anytime soon. These are hard words. This is not the kind of thing the corporate chief executive would ever use to coerce a numbers bump at any mega church.

"Help me to honor You by believing before I feel, for great is the sin if I make feeling a cause of faith...when faith is begun it is imperfect and must grow, as chapped ground opens wider and wider until rain comes." -- from The Valley of Vision, a Puritan prayer book

Paraphrased from a Tozer sermon on Noah via the book of Hebrews: Bible teachers find "keys" to passages...if you got a love letter from your far-off love in Borneo, you wouldn't sit down and say, "Now let me find the key to this..." No. You'd just read it and re-read it and feast on every word. There would be no analysis. #christianliving
