Join us this Saturday, April 14, 4 - 7 p.m. for the opening reception of "Tomorrowland," a group exhibition curated by Rory Devine, featuring works by Lisa Adams, Jeff Colson, Sean Duffy, Kathleen Johnson, Marion Lane, Pat Murch, Patrick Nickell, Rebecca Ripple, Richard Roe, Matthew Scarlett and Keith Walsh. This exhibition posits the question: How will work made in the present be read in the future without a contemporary context?

Come join us this Saturday, April 14, at the opening reception for artist Junghwa Hong's first solo exhibition, "Veiled."

http://cb1.co/ap

Junghwa Hong chose the burqa, a long, loose, enveloping outer garment that covers the entire female body, including the face, as a metaphor for various cultures’ coercive efforts to hide women’s identities, restrict their freedom, and reduce their capacities to see, hear, and have a voice. Multiple paintings of covered women leading daily lives filled with work, friends, resistance, and child rearing are both poignant and beautiful. A large painting of a ceremony from Hong’s native South Korean culture alludes to women’s mandated labor but excluded participation, and paintings of leaders of the #MeToo movements in South Korea and in the United States laud women uncovering, exposing, and resisting gender-based violence around the world.

Thank you David S. Rubin and ArtScene for recommending Kevin Larmon's exhibition "slipping in and out of phenomenon." Show closes this Saturday, April 7. Do not miss!

http://cb1.co/ao

Image: Kevin Larmon, "ferrari red," 2017, acrylic automotive paint and clear coat on wood panel, 18 x 18"

"Larmon calls the circular, elliptical, and irregularly shaped cut-outs in the paintings "glory holes,” which is slang for holes in the partitions between the stalls of men's rooms and the booths of adult video arcades (hence the subtle humor in the exhibition's title). The appeal of these paintings nevertheless extends beyond the artist's reading of the imagery. In "ferrari red," three equally spaced circles could just as easily be interpreted as three dots at the end of a sentence or a visual pun on the extensive art historical tradition of the triptych. In "tesla blue," an undulating shape that approximates a figure eight suggests an amoeba, a bowling pin, or a key hole. No matter how you read them, these paintings provide fun and stimulation for both the brain and the eyes." —David S. Rubin

Nathan Hayden, "We are Landscape 2," 2017, ceramic, 15.5" x 13" x 12", part of his solo exhibition "Strong Magic" at CB1 Gallery, on view through April 7.

"Hayden's other series of ceramic sculptures, collectively titled "We are Landscape," stand about a foot tall. Their playful, angular designs shape-shift between schematic tree forms, speculative architectural structures, and human and animal limbs." —Leah Ollman, Los Angeles Times http://cb1.co/ak
