Nobody wants to pay a plumber to fix a clog. Here is some advice to keep your pipes clog-free: run hot water after each use to keep oils and grease from sticking. Throw a bit of baking soda down the drain occasionally to clean pipes and absorb odors. Pour a cup of vinegar down the drain and let it sit for half an hour; vinegar is acidic enough to clean out the pipes.

Some items that seem harmless enough when flushed are actually quite troublesome. Cotton balls and swabs do not break down in water and will mash together to create massive blockages. Dental floss is non-biodegradable and will simply wrap itself around things as it travels, potentially causing clogs. Paper towels may seem similar enough to toilet papers to flush, but paper towels are specifically designed to not break down in water.

A lot of wasted food goes through the garbage disposal, so it is important to keep it clean to prevent bacterial growth and nasty odors. One easy, environmentally friendly way to clean a disposal is with lemons and vinegar. Cut a lemon into small pieces and freeze it in an ice cube tray with vinegar. Run the cubes through the disposal every few days to clean it and leave it smelling fresh.

Washing grease away down the drain is certainly expedient, but it’s not healthy for our sewer systems. Grease builds up in pipes until it blocks off the entire passage. In fact, in recent years the number of sewer pipe overflows caused by grease-blocked pipes has increased drastically. Take the time and make the small extra effort to dispose of grease in the trash rather than the sink.

Not everything needs to be flushed away! The toilet may seem like a handy way to make all kinds of little things disappear, but flushing the wrong items down your toilet can clog your pipes or damage the sewer or septic system. The biggest of these offenders are moist bathroom wipes; even the ones that claim to be flushable have been found to cause numerous problems.

If you do end of with a clogged toilet, contact Call for Plumbing in West Palm Beach at (561) 207-8162 to get it working again! http://callforplumbing.com/toilet-repair-replacement/

New Blog Post! A Toilet Story - The Amazing Toilet's History and Advances Toilets weren't and currently aren't used around the world. To some countries, toilets are a luxury, and to others, they disarm us from properly excreting waste. It is strange to think, that at one point, we used to dig holes for our waste, and cover them when we were done, but to this day, the same act is done. We keep our wastes aside from our living area, and for good reason. From the dirt hole... http://ow.ly/2ZTlBp
