Like Springfield and Shelbyville, Eagleton and Pawnee, .NET and Java are parallel settlements in the programming world, ostensibly rivals but rooted in shared ideas. In similar fashion, F# and Scala have emerged in recent years as leading alternative languages on these platforms, each embracing a multi-paradigm approach with an emphasis on functional principles.

After 8 years of .NET and F# development at Microsoft, Lincoln Atkinson recently finished his first year as a Scala dev at Redwood City startup Sumo Logic. What's it like to go from F# to Scala, from .NET to Java? What's familiar, what's foreign? From syntax to tooling to type inference and more, we'll talk about how these ecosystems compare in the real world.

The speaker

Lincoln Atkinson is a senior software engineer at Sumo Logic, working on the client data collection agent and first-tier cloud services. Prior to joining Sumo he served a tour of duty at Microsoft, building IT management products in System Center, then becoming a functional programming hippie contributing to the F# compiler and Visual Studio tools. Lincoln studied applied mathematics at UCLA and University of Washington.

Enrico will present a .NET Core quickstart ( win, osx, docker ) highlighting what's new. He will also demonstrate adding .NET Core target framework ( netstandard ) to an existing library.
This Hangout On Air is hosted by Community for F#. The live video broadcast will begin soon.

F# is a great fit not only for web programming but also for the Cloud. In this fast paced session, we’ll cover how we can harness the power of HTTP, F# and cloud services to develop compelling applications that are more than the sum of their parts.

We’ll discover how we can quickly and easily write stand-alone, data-driven applications in F#, progressively adding more features through simple composition. We'll then quickly and easily hook them up to .NET web frameworks. We’ll also demonstrate how to easily expose data from F# as standard JSON for consumption by a web client single page application.

We’ll then move on to how cloud services provide a fantastic hosting platform for F# web applications and demonstrate some of the awesome features that Microsoft Azure provides us from deployment through to hosting, scalability and resiliency. We’ll also look at how we can seamlessly plug in diagnostics, metrics and analytics within an application and view them through a dashboard integrated directly into the Azure portal.

About Isaac:

Isaac Abraham is an F# MVP and a .NET developer since .NET 1.0 with an interest in cloud computing and distributed data problems. He nowadays lives in both the UK and Germany, and is the director of Compositional IT. He specialises in consultancy, training and development, helping customers adopt high-quality, functional-first solutions on the .NET platform.

+Riccardo Terrell will finish up with his presentation that was cut-off due to technical issues with Google Hangouts.

Functional reactive programming supports elegant programming of dynamic and reactive systems by providing first-class, composable abstractions for behaviors (time-varying values) and events (streams of timed values). Using Functional Reactive Programming to handle event-stream of values over time provides an alternative to the Observer pattern, which produces a series of unique responses to discrete changes in state. Reactive Programming is useful anywhere the Observer pattern is common, and provides an elegant way to express computation in domains such as video games, networking, user interfaces and simulation. Once understood, it can greatly simplify your project and code dealing with asynchronous events with nested callbacks, complex list filtering/transformation, or timing concerns. During this presentation I will create, consume and compose event streams with Observables introducing the concept of FRP integrating time flow and compositional events to build Natural User Interfaces with Kinect and Leap using F#. You will walk away with the knowledge and excitement of how to use the Functional Reactive Programming approach and how to leverage the reactive programming power to build Natural User Interfaces.

About Riccardo:

+Riccardo Terrell is a Software Engineer Back-End at StatMuse Inc. who is passionate about functional programming. He is active in the F# community and started the DC F# user’s group. Riccardo is a believer in polyglot programming as a mechanism in finding the right tool for the job. He likes to describe himself as a functional guy living in an imperative world.
