Miracle Tree: 6 Health Benefits Of Willow Bark To Get You Chomping At The Bit

When we have a headache or experience any kind of body ache, we open our medicine cabinets and reach for a bottle of aspirin. This pain reliever and heart attack preventer is a “miracle drug” that has been one of the most popular pharmaceutical agents for over a century, but its natural equivalent has been used for thousands of years. Willow bark, also known as “nature’s aspirin,” contains a precursor to aspirin, which essentially provides the same benefits as the tablet.

Willow bark, specifically white willow bark, is available in the form of actual bits of tree bark for chewing, powder, and liquid extract. The usual dose of white willow bark, says the University of Maryland Medical Center, is 240 milligrams (mg) a day. Now, although willow bark provides similar benefits like aspirin, too much willow bark can cause its own set of problems.

Dr. Matthew Brennecke, a board certified naturopathic doctor practicing at the Rocky Mountain Wellness Clinic in Fort Collins, Colo., told Medical Daily in an email, “The use of too much White Willow bark or Aspirin cause lead to gastric ulcers, which can be very painful and are associated with gastric cancers as well. Too much White Willow bark can also be the cause of Reye’s syndrome in children, which can cause liver and brain swelling and have a possibility of death.”

In moderation and consumed responsibly, willow bark can be an excellent natural alternative to aspirin, eliminating the side effects of the tablet. So, get chomping at the bit!

1. Alleviates Acne

Willow bark extract can be found as an ingredient in cosmetics and personal care products due to its astringent, anti-inflammatory, and soothing properties. It contains salicylic acid, a BHA that is a natural exfoliant used in several acne treatments because it can help skin shed dead cells while clearing pores. It also contains phenolic acids, including salicin, salicortin and flavonoids, tannins, and minerals, which help with skin rejuvenation.

A study published in the journal Clinical Therapeutics found mild or moderate acne can be treated with nonprescription agents such as salicylic acid. This agent can reduce the number of primary lesions and therefore, the severity of all acne-related lesions. Salicylic acid has been shown to be more superior to benzoyl peroxide in reducing acne. Salicin in willow bark is believed to turn into salicylic acid when it's processed by the body.

2. Reduces Headaches

The consumption of white willow bark may help reduce the tension from headache-related pain. It contains the chemical salicin similar to acetylsalicylic acid in aspirin. The University of Maryland Medical Center states feeling the effects of willow bark may take longer to experience, but the effects can last longer compared to aspirin.

3. Eases Lower Back Pain

Willow bark supplements could be a natural remedy for lower back pain, neck, and muscle aches. Brennecke believes its fine to take white willow bark to help relieve some of that pain. “The components of white willow bark inhibit cyclooxygenase, which is responsible for the formation of prostaglandins, which is an inflammatory mediator. By stopping the formation of prostaglandins, white willow bark acts as an anti-inflammatory agent,” he said.

A 2001 study published in the journal Rheumatology found in a group of nearly 200 people with low back pain, those who received willow bark showed a significant improvement in pain compared to those who received a placebo. Moreover, those who received higher doses of the herb, specifically 240 mg salicin, experienced more significant pain relief than those who received a low dose of 120 mg salicin.

4. Reduces Arthritis and Osteoarthritis Pain

Willow bark can be an effective treatment for reducing arthritis and osteoarthritis-related pain by decreasing the swelling. By inhibiting cyclooxygenase and therefore, prostaglandins, according to Brennecke, it will reduce inflammation, thereby lessening the crippling pain. It's suspected white willow bark extract may regularly suppress the progression and onset of the disease. A 2004 study published in the Journal of Rheumatology found people with osteoarthritis who took willow bark extract providing 240mg of salicin reduced their pain by 14 percent compared to two percent in the placebo in a two-week randomized controlled trial.

5. Prevents Heart Attacks

The American Heart Association acknowledges a daily low-dose of aspirin a day can prevent heart attacks and stroke. The tablet has been linked to reducing the risk of internal clotting, which is related to these two health conditions. Since the effects of aspirin and willow bark have been comparable, it is believed willow bark extract may reap similar benefits.

“White Willow bark contains salicylates,” which means it has the same effect on the heart as aspirin does, according to Brennecke. Although drinking white willow bark tea can thin the blood like aspirin — making it less likely to clot — it’s important to know how much salicylates you get in each cup and monitor that amount.

6. Soothes Menstrual Cramps

Typically, menstrual cramps are usually the result of inflammation of the uterine lining and the contractions triggered by prostaglandins. Willow bark is believed to regulate the production of prostaglandins and reduce inflammation, which helps soothes not only cramps but PMS symptoms. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, professional herbalists recommend willow bark for menstrual cramps although there are no scientific studies to show it works.

Brennecke disagreed and stated, “Ibuprofen is a better choice when it comes to PMS and menstrual cramps.” However, “It would be fine to drink white willow bark tea while PMS and menstrual cramps are occurring, but if taken while menstruating, [it] could increase the bleeding.” He advised pain killers are a better option because it doesn’t thin the blood nearly as much as salicylic acid does.

Willow bark is considered to be a safer and natural alternative for those who can’t stomach the side effects of aspirin.

How Does Nattokinase Work For Good Blood Flow and Circulation?

Blood clotting is a normal process wherein blood thickens to form a protective barrier to stop bleeding. However, blood clots can sometimes form in places of the body which lead to various health complications such as heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure, and other problems that may be life-threatening. A potent anti-clotting enzyme called Nattokinase, which is extracted from the traditional Japanese fermented food Natto or boiled soybeans, has been found to aid the body in breaking up and dissolving blood coagulation. Find out more about Nattokinase by reading our article nattokinase-review. How does Nattokinase work to help the body achieve healthy blood flow and circulation?
Nattokinase works in the following ways:
-restores and supports normal blood pressure
-dissolves existing blood clots as well as breaks down the fibers found in it called fibrin
-prevents the formation of new, unnecessary blood clots
-encourages the production of plasmin and other agents that aid in dissolving clots, like urokinase
These enzymes bind with specific molecules of the body and then alters its structure in a manner that makes the cells function better. It basically hydrolizes proteins, and breaks them down into amino acids that can be easily absorbed and digested. Nattokinase breaks down the substance which makes arterial plaque sticky and thick, thereby thinning the blood and hastening plasmin production in a natural way.
Scientific Studies on Nattokinase
crystal structure of Nattokinase
Research conducted in 1990 by Dr. Sumi and his team demonstrated the fibrinolytic effects of Nattokinase. It was tested on 12 healthy volunteers, 6 Japanese men and 6 women, aged between 21-55 years old. They were given 7 ounces of Natto before breakfast, and then tracked fibrinolytic through blood plasma tests. One test involved a blood sample being taken, then a clot or thrombus was artificially induced. The time that's typically required to dissolve the clot was incredibly reduced in half, merely within two hours of treatment. On top of this, the volunteers exhibited this enhanced ability to dissolve blood clots for another 2-8 hours.
Another study conducted by the same team focused on inducing blood clots in the major leg vein of animals, who have received four Nattokinase capsules and a different animal group four placebo capsules prior to the test. The resulting x-rays of their blood vessels showed that the blood clots of those animals who had Nattokinase have fully dissolved with normal blood circulation restored, just within 5 hours of treatment. The group that was given placebo did not show improvement, with no dissolving noted after 18 hours of the treatment. Read our article on About Nattokinase Benefits to learn more.
Thinner Blood for Optimal Health
How does Nattokinase work towards better health? The body produces plasmin for dissolving clots, but its production is reduced as the body matures and ages. With the help of Nattokinase, which is even more effective and powerful than plasmin, the blood becomes thinner and therefore the body becomes stronger against conditions brought about by blood clots. It works naturally and promotes overall good health as the hearts is able to pump blood efficiently throughout your entire body.

5 Tips to Naturally Reduce Risks of High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure is something that millions of people suffer with throughout their lives, and it is usually brought on by a number of situations and events that we experience on a daily basis. Anything from our diet, weight, age, and your alcohol consumption.

High blood pressure which is also known as hypertension is when the blood that is pushed around can significantly change our blood pressure readings. body at a greater force than it should be. The blood is forced against the wall of your arteries as the heart pumps it out, and in today’s article we are going to look at some ways that you can reduce the risk of high blood pressure.

Go for fitness walks
One of the main exercise routines that you can do to start with, that will greatly reduce the blood pressure in your body is to head out on power walks doing 10,000 steps/day or more. These types of walks can be done either on your own or in conjunction with a friend or a partner. The method behind this is quite simple, the faster you walk the more your heart is going to work for you, in helping to use oxygen supplied to your body more effectively and efficiently. This then has a knock on effect to how hard your heart actually works in order to get the blood pumping around the vessels and arteries within your body.

Generally this kind of activity should be done each day of the week for around 30 minutes in order to have a positive effect. The more you do and the faster you walk, the better your heart will work and the lower your blood pressure will be.

Exercise regularly
If you have a job that requires you to sit down at a desk for 40 or more hours per week the chances are you are not going the adequate amount of exercise that you need each week. Whether that’s because you are bound to your desk, or are simply just too tired at the end of the working day to exercise.

However, if you are a sufferer from high blood pressure it could be in your best interests to try and stick to a regular exercise plan, and that doesn’t mean having to join a gym or aerobic exercise. 30 minutes of walking each day can significantly help to lower your blood pressure, and avoid the issues that come with high blood pressure. You must remember however, to keep this routine up because if you stop exercising then high blood pressure will soon show up again.

Think about walking, cycling or swimming for half an hour a day and feel the benefit after just a few weeks.

Eating a healthy diet
The next step from a healthy exercise regime is to eat the correct foods as well, because fatty foods will severely affect your blood pressure and could lead to serious problems to your long-term health. This isn’t rocket science either, you already know that fruit and vegetable are key players in a well-balanced healthier diet but you should also broaden your horizons by looking at whole grain foods, cinnamon oil and low-fat dairy produce.

Cinnamon oil in particular can help bring down high blood pressure for those that have Type 2 diabetes, but not only that, cinnamon oils can be used in a variety of different meals from breakfast cereals, to dinnertime dishes, and even in your hot beverages.

Limit sodium-rich diet
Sodium or salt as it is more popularly known by is a very major part in high blood pressure. Just the slightest salt reduction in your diet and daily in-take can drastically bring down your blood pressure to a close to normal level.

It’s not hard to make the decrease in sodium either, all you need to do is be a bit more observant with what you are eating so be sure to check package labels when you are buying processed foods at the grocery store. Also, if you had salt to your meals you might want to reduce the amount of salt you use or try foods without salt on altogether.

If you can cut it out of your diet completely then just start to make subtle changes and cut back gradually. As we have said, just a small reduction can show massive improvements in bringing your high blood pressure down to a safer level.

Reduce your stress
The last player in the causes of high blood pressure is stress; this can be from work-related stress to home life and everything that tends to fall in the middle.

You may think that reducing stress in your life is hard but again it just takes a little thinking outside the box and finding new ways to cope with the stress. Firstly you need to find out what is causing the stress and then look at ways on how to deal with it. A lot of people will tell you to do breathing exercises, or take yoga classes in order to decrease stress hormones. Exhaling and inhaling for a few minutes each day will lighten the stress burden and decrease your blood pressure.
