Are you planning on doing some gardening this weekend? Bending over a garden bed, kneeling down, and twisting to get right to the back of the bed are not pleasant movements for those of us with a bad back and can cause pain to worsen. So, what can you do about it? Well, for starters, why not try an elevated garden bed to help reduce added back pain and strain?

Research shows that pets decrease feelings of depression, loneliness, and isolation. Pets may also be able to do your heart some good — they are credited with lowering blood pressure and cholesterol.

In honor of National Love Your Pets Day, share a photo of your pet(s) past or present in the comments and let us guess their name!

In a study of patients diagnosed with disc degeneration, herniated disc, or radiculopathy (a nerve condition that causes tingling and weakness in the limbs), half of the patients had fusion surgery, the other half no surgery. After 2 years, only 26% of the surgery patients had actually returned to work compared to 67% of patients who didn't have surgery.

Researchers also found that there was a 41% increase in the use of painkillers, particularly opiates, in the patients who underwent surgery.

“The study provides clear evidence that for many patients, fusion surgeries designed to alleviate pain from degenerating discs doesn’t work”, says the study’s lead author Dr. Trang Nguyen, a researcher at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.
