Since I (Brandi)was 14 God placed international adoption on my heart. in 2009 He blessed me with a wonderful husband and after three years of wonderful marriage God started to place adoption on his heart as well.
April 7th - 16th God spoke to both of us about adopting and we started to discuss and pray about adopting. We also sought parental wisdom and continued to pray and educate ourselves on adoption. Through parental support and Gods confirmation through scripture we were confident this was a path God was leading us in.
We decided to start the adoption process after we sold our house and moved closer to our church family in American Fork. We started the process of getting our house ready to sale back on March 24th but on Aprtih 17th God kept speaking to me about starting the process sooner. I didnt realize this was Gods prompting at first. I wanted to start the adoption process sooner but brushing the thoughts aside thinking it was just my female emotions of just wanting a child now! BUT it kept hitting me that I needed to do this now and start the process. Again I kept brushing it off. As this kept going on all day I started to think this could be God speaking to me. I was having a hard time discerning if this was Him or me. So I prayed and prayed. I finally asked Him to reveal His will to me clearly. I asked if this was His will that He would provide money toward our adoption that night and if so I would start the process the next day!  (Yes I know thats not how your supposed to ask for answers but I did). In the meantime God had been speaking to someone very special to us to give us a mustard seed. So on April 17th she invited us to dinner where her and her wonderful husband gave us a card with money in it with a sweet letter explaining the money was for our adoption process. I was so amazed and understood that this was God working and speaking extremely clear to me. I told Zak at the dinner table what I had prayed and honestly he was freaking out and he started to ask God to confirm this to him as well. We got home from dinner that evening and was updating his IPOD podcasts. While I was sitting on the couch next to him he exclaims “ No Way!” I look over and his face was in pure amazement and he was pointing at the computer screen. I looked and all the podcasts which were all grey and dim except one. It was titled “The grace of adoption.” From Fort Lauderdale pastor Don Sauder. Check it out! We then started to discuss together our concerns of adoptions. The next day we listened to the podcast “The Grace of Adoption” and it spoke about every single concern we had on adoption and gave us the desire to experience those things. Then through Ephesians 1:3-6 God confirmed His will of adoption to Zak. We started the process of adoption that night!
On April 18-21st we started to study countries we would consider adopting from including domestic adoption. But through much study and research on qualifications, processes, inclusions, expenses, issues of each country and much prayer we eliminated our choices to Ethiopia, South Korea or Tawain. But we were still open to domestic adoption as well. We reached out to wonderful friends who have previously adopted for support and wisdom. They are such a blessing to us!
On April 22nd we had a guest pastor Wes Bentley come and speak at our church about his mission in Africa and training up chaplains and he referenced many severe issues going on in Africa. Mainly in Sudan, Uganda, Kenya and referenced Ethiopia as a place where children were traveling to for safety. We started to research Uganda, Sudan and Kenya adoptions. Kenya and Sudan are closed to US adoptions due to the unrest and Uganda was great but God kept leading our hearts to Ethiopia still. No other reason other than Gods leading. I started to educate myself on the LRA and Joseph Koni and spent time in prayer for the child soldiers of Africa. We continue to pray for Gods leading.
April 26-28th we started to research adoption agencies as well. We chose our adoption agency which specialized in Ethiopia as God continued to lead us to Ethiopia. We faxed in a application to our chosen adoption agency. We continue to pray and seek Gods confirmation in the Word.
April 30th we received a call! We are accepted into their adoption program and are approved to adopt for Ethiopia. Now the process of reading all the contracts, Risks, payments begin. We really have to rely on Gods working in this to fund this ministry. We announced the official acceptance of adoption to our families. They are excited and supportive!
May 2nd we announced our adoption to the youth group. A movie on our facebook pages was posted. It still makes me cry watching it. It was such a special moment we will always remember.
May 3rd-4th The enemy started to discourage us through racism received (we didn’t expect racism at all. I guess naive of us.) and discouraging stories. But through each of our daily Bible reading we received encouragement and confirmation once again from God. We were not seeking to find these passages but just through our daily reading and the living active Word of God spoke to us again. I was in Psalm 2 which was so encouraging specific to what we were experiencing and Zak received confirmation that were doing Gods will still and were heading in the right direction through Proverbs 4:25-27.
May 5th we signed the contracts and mailed of the official application and first payment toward our adoption.
Today July 7th we are working on completing our Home study. Since May 5th we have gone through quite a rollor coaster of emotions already. we have been working on getting paper work, physician reports, and training courses completed. The entire homestudy packet had been completed and sent to our adoption agency we are currently trying to correct some tax forms we sent in incorrectly but while our home study is being approved I am now creating this blog. I know this was an extremely long post they wont normally be this long I just wanted to let you all in our lives the last few months of our crazy adoption journey. THANK YOU for being interested and caring.
